I'm a midwife. It took me 4 years of college. The last year was an internship. You had to deliver 40 babies on your own to qualify! In ireland all babies are delivered by midwives unless it's and emergency or csection.
Australia's healthcare system is very different to the US. We have universal healthcare here, meaning its free for all. However you can choose to have private cover and therefore choose your own doctor/hospital ect. I work in the public sector and chose to have my care in the public sector. I'd say 70% of women in Australia have public care. Each hospital has a slightly different set up as to who delivers the babies, provides maternity care. Where I work midwives provide most if the care and the ob only get involved when they are needed.
