Bad smelly breast milk ??!

I just went back to work and my 5m old is refusing to eat defrosted milk that my mom claims smells bad. This is now the second bottle (of 6) in 24 hours this is happening with. It is from August and was stored in a freezer. The same freezer I used with my older daughter and never had an issue. What could it be!!? I hate to dump my gold!!!!

High lipase? What does it taste like?
This is my first thought too.

I agree, my defrosted milk smells soapy. It's high lipase, mine takes 2 months in the freezer to do this. But my LO eats it fine in his cereal. I would try to feed your LO a bottle and see what he does. Maybe your mom is hesitant to feed it to you LO because of the smell. You could also try mixing half fresh half frozen to see if your LO will take it that way.

Bouncing off of this, you may want to taste it before trying to give it to your LO again.  I have high lipase and my milk starts off tasting soapy and ends up with a rancid bile-like taste and smell.  It is absolutely disgusting and I felt horrible for trying to feed it to my DD.  I now have to scald my milk before freezing it so that this doesn't happen.

  • I just posted about this:

But mine smells rancid, like sour, rotten, don't want to take a second whiff of it yuck.  I am so confused because I thought that it must be lipase, but now it sounds like it isn't.  It only happens with the fridge stuff, not the frozen (so far).  I would also appreciate any help!

  • My LO was violently refusing it. This is my 2nd baby and older daughter was breastfeed for 11m and I pumped at work for 7 months. Could it be I didn't have it with her? Or maybe she tolerated it? How do you know how long before the frozen milk starts to taste bad? I have milk 3m old in there.

  • Do you think if I mix the bottle with half formula (which she's never had before) it would help with the taste!? I don't know what to do for her for tomorrow!?

  • I don't know about the frozen milk but I read an article that said milk can start tasting bad from lipase within 4 hours whether left out or refrigerated. The only way to stop it is to scald the milk...

  • Does anyone know how scalding it doesn't go against the whole re heating and cooling rule. I'm pumping at work and putting it in my cooler and scalding at home. So it's cooled then reheated then frozen. Seems like that goes against anything I've ever been told.

  • Yes, she has without a problem. Not very regularly, sometimes 1x in 2 weeks and occasionally (like if I had a wedding) 3x in one day.
