Successful VBACs come in

Talk to me about your successful VBACs. I want so, so badly to have a successful VBAC and I'm well aware that there is no magic formula. However, between my doctors telling me all the risks multiple times and just getting a text from a friend who was going for a VBAC that she's waiting for a C/S at the hospital, I'm seriously doubting myself. What if I can't do it? What if I just give up? I'm going to have my husband and a doula in the delivery room. I'm driving myself crazy going through the "what ifs". What helped get you ladies through? Especially the pushing part which I never got to last time. Help me gals...I need some encouragement. With all the things I know could go wrong, I want to be in the most positive mindset once I'm there.

Re: Successful VBACs come in

  • I haven't had a VBAC, but I am trying for one. Are you trying to go med-free? I have a friend who had a successful VBAC, and just hearing how much better she felt her recovery was, especially with a toddler to deal with, is helping me out.

  • @KimberlyTX I am trying to go med free, but would take meds over the surgery in a heartbeat if I wasn't able to manage the pain.

  • I haven't had one but am attempting one.  I'm not trying to go med free though - just trying to wait a lot longer before getting the epidural.  I just had a good friend who had a successful VBAC.  She did get an epidural though.  She also had a doula as will I.  Good luck!  I'm trying to go in with the attitude that I would love a VBAC, but if it's not in the cards and I need a RCS, I will be ok with that....because I have to be.

  • Keep in mind, the odds of successful VBAC depend on why you had a c-section the first time, and whether it's the type of problem that's likely to reoccur.

If the first section was because the baby was in the wrong position, but the baby goes into a nice dropped head-down pose this time, your chances are excellent.  If it was for failure to progress due to big baby/small pelvis, you might need a section again.
  • No experience personally, but my mom delivered my little sister as a VBAC, and she was almost ten and a half pounds! Her initial c-section was because of having twins, and I happened to be breech.

  • I am trying for one, but my hospital won't let me go past 40 weeks and my DD was 6 days late.

I can share a positive story w/ you from a friend, though! She just had a successful VBAC in September. She said her doctor was very supportive and that was a big key for her. She did get an epi.

    Good luck!

  • I had a successful VBAC with DS2 and I'm going for it with #3. I remember all the questions and nagging doubts. Thankfully my provider was very supportive (I did have to switch providers).

I went into it with the attitude that I just wanted to go into labor naturally and see what happened, and if things got complicated then at least I tried. Really I just wanted the chance to try since I never really had the chance the first time and I thought my body could do it.

I did go past my due date and ended up having a 36 hour labor before I delivered. But he came out in 3 easy pushes and it was wonderful! The recovery was a BREEZE compared to the C-section and it was all worth it.

So....stick to your guns about giving it a go, but I do think its important to keep an open mind if things start to go south. I decided early on that if things didn't look good then I wanted them to do another C-section ASAP. In fact my provider basically told me that to have a successful VBAC you needed a "picture perfect labor."

I did get an epi around the 24 hr mark, I was exhausted and couldn't handle anymore.

This time I'm hoping for my med-free VBAC...I've been trying for an unmedicated vaginal birth each time. I hope that I will have a shorter labor and be able to do it! Thankfully the VBAC part doesn't intimidate me anymore because I've done it!!

  • OP, thanks for the post. I'm with you and having the same fears/concerns. It is great to hear stories of sucesses since my dr just talks up the risks...
  • More on this...I have an u/s scheduled for 36 weeks to make sure my placenta isn't covering my C-section scar.

Here is a lot of info from the ACOG website about VBACs - essentially they recommend that most women be allowed a TOLAC (trial of labor after caeserean). The risks of a VBAC are generally lower than the risks of a RCS.

I think that unfortunately so many doctors have come up and out of medical school into an environment that is not VBAC-friendly and they are just more comfortable doing the C-section, even though all the evidence points to lower risks with VBACs.

I did have to switch providers (my first OB who did my C-section would only do a VBAC if I had had a "previously successful VBAC.") I was like how am I supposed to get that if you won't do one!! Of course, now I've had one but I'm not changing back to her, even though I did like her. I'd much rather stay with a practice that is experienced with and comfortable doing VBACs than a practice that obviously doesn't want to do them!
