When your lo is playing are they allowed to get all there toys out, play as they wish and make a total mess which you (or they help) clean up at the end of the day. Or are they allowed a few toys only at a time and if they want to get more out they need to clean those toys up first?

i know a mom who's very particular about orderliness & she taught her daughter from a very young age to put back each toy before she started playing with another. it works for them, even if it's not what i'd do.
I let them drag out whatever they want, but I have all the really messy items (most the puzzles, sorting toys, things with a million pieces, art supplies) put away in the closet (which is baby locked.) So, the things they are dragging out aren't so messy it will take hours to clean up. I also recently enacted a "no toys stored in the living room anymore" policy. At the end of the day or whenever I just get fed up with it, they all go back to their proper storage places in their rooms. We did have a big toy container in the living room, but it seemed like it was just dumped daily. At least this way it takes longer for the mess to migrate to my living room. I vacuum daily, so I just announce the vacuum will be coming for anything not picked up in ten minutes and that usually gets DS1's feet moving quickly.
