Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

2 naps to 1 transition

I've read that most babies do the transition from 2 naps to 1 when they are 15-18m.  My son is only 12.5m but for the past 4 days, he's acting like he wants to drop his first nap?

He's been on 2-nap schedule since 8 months, and we do the naps on schedule.  He's a great napper - wake up at 6:30-7, 1st nap at 9:30 (1-1.5hr), 2nd nap at 2:30 (1.5hr), bed at 8:15-8:30.  We stick with the same schedule every day and very rarely it doesn't work.

The past 4 days, however, he has changed.

Day 1: I put him down at 9:30am. He woke up after 10 minutes, babbling (not crying).  I let him babble, then went in to rock him/sing to him.  He would not go back to sleep.

Day 2: He again woke up after 10 minutes, babbling.  This time, after 20 minutes, he went back to sleep and slept for his usual amt of time.

Day 3: He took his normal morning nap without any problems

Day 4 (today): Put him down at 9:30am, woke up after 10 minutes babbling, and wouldn't go back to sleep.

Is this a sign that he is ready to skip his first nap?  I don't know if I should still put him down at 9:30 and let him nap for however long?  Or try pushing back his first nap by 15-30 minutes?  Or simply switch to a 1-nap schedule?  I feel like he's too young to go down to 1 nap right now.

Re: 2 naps to 1 transition

  • At our DC, they move to 1 nap in the 12-18 month room, so once DS started in there, he was only getting 1 nap on weekdays.  We still occasionally do morning naps on the weekends, but it's usually more of a quiet time in his crib for an hour while I knock out a few chores.  Similar to what your LO is doing-babbling to himself in his crib after about 10 min.  I'm fine with that as long as it isn't full on screaming.  We were on a very similar schedule to yours for the 2 naps. though the afternoon nap was a little earlier.  Now, his 1 nap is shortly after lunch, sometime between 12:30-1.  He usually naps until about 3. It's been working well for us so far.

  • We started one nap a day at one.
  • My DD was 13 months went she went to 1 nap.  DS is 14 months and just went to 1 nap.  Every kid is different.  Try pushing the morning nap back by about 30 mins for a few days and see how he days.  He may be ready to switch to 1 longer nap earlier in the afternoon.  You'll probably have to move up bedtime to compensate.  Good luck!
  • This is a great checklist for when to switch from 2 naps to 1.

  • My son is almost 15 months and some days he will take 1 and some days he will take 2. It just depends on the night before and how early he wakes up. My DD was the same way. She kind of went back and forth until she completely transitioned to 1 nap.  I would just be flexible with it. Don't force it on him, though. If he seems tired, put him down. My son normally naps at 9:30 and then 1:30. But when he takes only 1 nap a day, he usually goes down around 11:30 or 12.

  • When our son turned one, he acted like that too, but he is still currently taking two naps most days. There will be a day on the weekend that he will only take one and will go to bed early, but 98% of the time he will take two. It could be just a phase. Ours went through that for a couple of weeks, but then was back on schedule. It seems too early yet. I would keep trying to get him to take two naps if possible.

  • It sounds like his schedule has not really changed, he's just taking longer to fall asleep. If he's not upset, I would just leave him in there and let him jabber if he wants. If he's falling asleep after only 20 minutes or so, that's a pretty big sign he still wants to nap.

My son makes a huge racket (repeating sounds and rolling around) for at least the first 15 minutes after I leave the room, and sometimes he messes around for 30-40 minutes before passing out. They are learning and experiencing so much right now that it may take longer to settle down even if they seem totally exhausted. Adults are the same way. I never fall asleep immediately either....the only difference is I lay still and read a book instead of loudly babbling incoherently :)
