Washing hands

How fussed are you with washing LO's hands?

T's fingers are always in her mouth, so it would do her well to have clean hands, but I never think of just washing her hands. We'll wash them if they are obviously dirty, like when she's been digging, but otherwise, I don't think of it. They obviously get washed in the bath every day.

Am I being totally negligent, or is this okay?

Re: Washing hands

  • I don't think about it either unless they obviously need to be washed. I figure with her crawling around they are just going to get dirty again in just a few minutes. Also she enjoys washing her own hands in the dogs water bowl if you don't stop her.

  • We started washing hands before meals... No soap yet, just rinsing basically. She thinks it is great fun to stick her hands under the faucet.
  • I wash his hands after meals because he is usually sticky or if they are dirty, but mostly just in the bath at night.  I know at daycare they wash his hands after every diaper change and after all meals and snacks.

I wash them if she' has dirty hands but we were at the Dr. Office yesterday and she was playing with the toy in the waiting room while a snotty boy was playing. I made sure she didn't touch her face then as soon as we got in the room I washed her hands. We don't go to daycare so I'm not used to sharing with snotty kids lol.

  • That's funny that you bring this up, because I just remarked to my husband that I can't remember the last time I washed Henry's hands outside of bath time.  We wipe his hands down after meals, but I wouldn't really count that as washing them.

I'm going to go ahead and say it's A-OK!  Ha...

  • We don't wash hands in the strictest sense, but we wipe hands several times a day:

    Upon wakeup
Before and after each meal and snack
    Before bed

  • I try to remember to wipe his hands before meals, and I always wipe them after because they're usually covered in food. Other than that, I try to wipe them after we leave the park and after we leave playspace.

  • lol...I only thought of this today because a friend of mine used hand sanitizer on her 18 month old and I was thinking "I don't think that would be a good idea with mine because she'd probably just eat it.." but yeah we wipe if they're visibly dirty but otherwise just with bath time.
