Swaddle ninja

Within the last couple weeks, no matter how tightly I swaddle, this little dude of mine finds a way out. Not immediately... But in the MOTN, he'll wake up flailing around. I can't help but wonder 1. How long had he been trying to work himself outta that thing?! 2. Is really hungry or did he just wake himself up (is this what's partly triggering his sleep regression)? and 3. if it's time to wean from the swaddle OR try to another one and hope for better results (we use the SwaddleMe now and it's always worked great up until a couple weeks ago. We've also tried the Halo sleep sack but had issues with it riding up over his face. I think this is a result of squirming, so I'm not sure how to resolve it).

Anyone else experiencing baby ninja syndrome at this point? I'm kinda feeling like I already know what to do (no swaddle), but am hoping for other thoughts/suggestions because that swaddle has been a lifesaver and I clearly am not ready to let go unless absolutely necessary.

If you DID wean from the swaddle, any luck going all natural (in just a sleeper) with baby returning to normal sleep or is the Merlin's magic sleep suit the way to go?

Sorry this post is a little all over the place! I'm really overthinking this, can ya tell?

TIA!

Re: Swaddle ninja

  • Sorry, I don't have advice, but we are going through the same exact thing. My LO has spent most of the night trying to break out of her Halo swaddle blanket or flailing around in her sleeper. I know it may be time to give up the swaddle but I don't know how well she is going to sleep without it. I will be watching this thread for responses.

  • My dd broke out of her swaddleme last night! She still startles to much to not be swaddled. If it happens again we'll change our plan.

  • I started weaning my LO from his swaddle sack by swaddling him in a blanket. Will do this for two weeks and then after Thanksgiving I will try just a sleep sack with his arms completely free. He was STTN before I started this and now he is up twice a night. Ugh. It sucks to regress but I want my little dude safe when I move him to the crib in a few weeks...he's rolling over pretty easily now.
  • When my LO started breaking out of the swaddle mes (at 6 weeks) we went to the woombie. There is NO breaking out of that thing. It was awesome. I LOVED it for MOTN diaper changes.

Then she started rolling over at 8 weeks so we had to transition her, unfortunately she could roll over in the sleep suit as well, so that was a bust. We just went straight to sleepers and it was NBD. Good luck!

  • We started with one arm out of the swaddle and now have two arms out. Since that's not really a swaddle anymore with both arms put, we tried not using it at all. He woke up within 45 minutes. We are going to try again in a week or so.
  • We've been battling this too. Our little Houdini loves to have his arms out and above his head, but because he lacks arm/hand control, he'll wake himself up with a good arm flail. :( I haven't tried any of the sleep sacks, just because I think he'd hate it. So right now, we're waking up at 2:30, 3:30, 4:30, etc. to re-wrap him, until we can figure out something better.

  • My baby was Houdini when it came to swaddles and startled himself awake.. We got the magic sleep suit and it's been really helpful.
  • LO will stay swaddled if I do it...I use a blanket swaddle and have gotten good at the double swaddle. She usually wakes up trying to get out of it, cant, and gets pissed off. If DH swaddles her, I usually come home to find her passed out, one arm out...LOL

The night she sleeps with no swaddle, she is up at least 2x and getting her back to sleep is hard. If she is swaddled, we usually only have 1 wake up....

  • When mine started doing this, we'd swaddle for the first stretch of sleep because that's when she is normally zonked out.  Second stretch would be unswaddled arms but the halo swaddle part still wrapped around her body.  She did the whole arm jerking thing for a few nights but eventually got used to it.  I think it pissed her off more to have her arms wrapped up than it did waking up from them.

  • It probably depends on your baby. With my DD we pretty much just went straight to no swaddle and she was fine, but she also sttn by 12 weeks.

DS is still up at least 3 times per night at 15 weeks, and we're only able to get him to sleep flat in his bed due to the magic sleepsuit.

Maybe you could see what he does with one arm out and see what happens. When we transitioned DD it was summer so we didn't put her in anything else, but you may want to use a sleepsack.

  • We only swaddle these days when he's being really fussy. We use a blanket, fold in half so it's a triangle, then one side goes over one arm and tucked behind him, and the other side goes over the other arm and tucked around him. It keeps his arms close enough to his body so he can't startle himself awake, but his legs can still move around since he likes to stretch them out when he sleeps. It works for us.

  • This is why I bought the Merlin's Magic Sleepsuit. She wakes up every time she breaks out of the swaddle overnight, so about every 30-60 minutes. Not fun! She sleeps much better in the Sleepsuit.

  • Thanks for the tips, ladies. Think we're gonna try one arm out first and see how he does... Maybe just for the second half of the night. I like your suggestion too about leaving his legs out, @maritza707. I think his startle reflex is still too strong to go no swaddle at all!
  • Google batwing swaddle...it is working for us now!!

Good luck! That's how they swaddle him at daycare so they can buckle him in to the rnp for naps. It's perfect. :)

Awesome!! I think this is what @maritza707 was talking about, too, but I was having a hard time envisioning. I'd like to see him try to get outta THAT! Thanks for the video reco!
  • We do a version of batwing swaddle and it works wonders!
