Soft Structured Carriers

I know we've talked about this before, but I found this comparison chart online with prices/features/etc for a bunch of different types of carriers, so if you're like me and get easily overwhelmed unless you have everything nice and neat in one location, then this is a great resource for helping you choose which carrier you might want to buy.

I'm sure some of our resident babywearing experts can weigh in with their own opinion, but I found it to be a great start, especially since the closest babywearing group is more than an hour away from me (boo!)

Re: Soft Structured Carriers

  • I have a Boba 3g, a babyhawk mai tei, and a ring sling. The Boba is definitely my favorite. I used when my daughter was a new born (no insert needed so it wasn't too hot) and I still use it now that she is 15 months and I'm pregnant! I borrowed a friend's ergo not too long ago and I liked it but I am devoted to my Boba.
  • Loading the player...
  • I also used a Moby when she was a newborn. I loved the moby because it was stretchy (as opposed to woven wraps) it was just very hot!
  • Wonderful link! I'm stealing it for our group if you don't mind. :P

  • One more thing, the purse strap buckle on the Boba 3g has been a lifesaver. It is so hard to keep my purse strap in place with the bulky shoulder straps but the purse strap buckle keeps it right there.
  • I've only had the k'tan and the ergo for BW. I like the k'tan because it's easy to put on (I had trouble with the moby). But didn't like it once the baby got heavier. That's the point I switch to the ergo.

  • Thank you!

I'm very interested in learning about the different carriers, but, like you, not near any baby wearing group. Past posts have been helpful, but not fully instructive for a visual learner like myself!

AMA & SAIF. TTC #1 since Oct. 2010. DX: Unexplained. BFP on break after 32 months trying and 2 med cycles. Baby girl born at 40w0d!

  • Thanks so much for posting this! I do remember it from before but it was so overwhelming at the time. This is super helpful.

  • I loved my Moby for the littler ages, DD is a winter baby. It is very warm, but comfortable and snuggly.

  • Great link! Thanks! I'm thinking if a Boba Air for this LO since I'll be chasing DD around a playground this spring/summer and I'm concerned our Ergo may be too warm. Does anyone have one?

I'm curious about the Boba Air too. I was thinking it might be nice to have on hand as an 'extra' at my parents or ILs.

  • Regarding the Boba Air, the material is gauze and very airy for hot climate, but I will tell you honestly they are not very supportive after very short wearing periods.(My son was 25lbs when we tested one out. I do feel they would be great for smaller babies.) Boba is a GREAT brand and wonderful carriers, but I personally wouldn't spend the funds on one. Especially if you have picky shoulders. Some complain about it being diggy. The price is great though! I found these MT to be a bit more supportive for the price ($40).

  • Yep, the boba air is meant to be a portable, travel type carrier.  I would not choose it for my every day carrier.

  • I would LOVE to add another FANTASTIC carrier to that site! It's new: the Beco Soleil.
    https://www.preggiepals.com/beco-soleil-baby-carrier/

We went to a babywearing workshop and tried it out and LOOOOOOOOOOVED it. We were torn between the Boba 3g and the new Beco Soleil. I love the Beco because the straps can cross on the back, so the weight distribution was great and felt really supportive. Also, the leg openings are padded, which is nice for LOs.

However... I ultimately decided to go with the Boba 3g, and for two reasons. 1) the Boba 3g doesn't require an infant insert, and 2) the Boba 3g has really nice straps/slings for LO's legs as he gets older. That wasn't incredibly important to me, but it was a nice bonus that other carriers don't have.

Anywho... I'd highly recommend checking out the Beco Soleil for those of you with babywearing stores nearby! I'm still crushing on it a little. :)

@nickiechan, not to tempt you into another carrier, but you should check it out too ;)

TTC since December 2012, BFP 6/25/13. EDD 3/2/14. Baby Elias born 2/21/14 (38w5d)!
  • Also to add: I always thought I'd be a Moby Wrap kind of girl. But I LOVED the Sakura Bloom linen sling! To me, it's a perfect option around the house and as LO gets bigger. Because it doesn't stretch, you can even hip-carry toddlers! I think our Boba 3g will be our go-to for the long run, but the Sakura sling is going to be amazing with a newborn, I think.

We just got one for the Lending Library! :D I hear great things about them and can't wait to try it!

Also, great choice with the Boba. It was our choice for SSC for DS. We did upgrade to a Toddler Tula when he was around 17 months and LOVE that to death! I think it is the best carrier investment I've ever made. Including all of my wraps. We use that heck out of it. We really didn't use the Boba much since DH and I loved wrapping in a woven, however once DS got bigger DH didn't enjoy wrapping as much and used the Boba, but he felt it to be diggy and that is when I got him the Toddler Tula which we are in LOVE.

With any carrier you want to make sure that the baby has knee to knee support so the weight is evenly distributed on your hips and shoulders. If you have a carrier with a narrower seat base more pressure is going to be placed on your shoulders instead of your hips. Wider seat bases is the better option for support and comfort.
