Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Signs to move to a toddler bed?

What are good signs that you should begin the transition to a toddler bed?  DS is only 14 months old so I know it's kind of early.  We are moving at the end of the month and DH asked if we should just set up his crib as the toddler bed so it is one less step later on.  I was completely taken back by his suggestion at first, but after thinking about it I thought I would see what you lovely ladies thought!???  DS climbs like crazy (outside of his crib).  He has yet to attempt to climb from his crib.  He still nurses to sleep 98% of the time and we co-sleep occasionally (usually if he wakes in the middle of the night). Lastly, he can climb down anything safely, even our high queen bed (since about 10/11 months).  Last weekend I put him down for a nap in a twin bed with a guard rail and he climbed down and came out of the room all on his own when he woke up.  Didn't cry at all.

Thoughts??? TIA

Re: Signs to move to a toddler bed?

  • We aren't quite there yet, but a friend of mine had to move to a toddler bed around that age because her LO was climbing out of his crib and just falling to the ground to get out. Once she moved him to a toddler bed he was happy. Since you've already had a good experience with him napping in a twin bed I'd say give it a try! The only negative thing I could see is if he doesn't want to go to bed he has access to the rest of his room and any toys he can reach etc. Or if he wakes up he could walk around the house in the middle of the night if he can open his bedroom door. But that's going to happen no matter what age you transition IMO. Just something to think about.

  • I have no plans to do it until he's climbing out or until 2.5-3 yrs old.  That said, go for it! :)
  • DD would never sleep if she could get access to her toys at night. I am dreading the day she learns to climb out and we have to switch.
