Btdt ear infection??

Evening all!

Just wondering how your LOs were acting when they had an ear infection. We have a pedi appointment tomorrow (it's with the pedi I do not like, ours is not in tomorrow) and I'm wondering if it's really his ears... Or maybe it's teething... Or maybe it's both?

We ebf and he has been a great nurser from day 1. The last few days he sporadically cries hard, pulls off and carrys on when nursing. It isn't every session and he usually will end up nursing after crying, soothing, switching boobs, crying, soothing, etc. Not everytime. But he is seriously fussy and it happens at the drop of a hat and sporadically when nursing.

He has no fever. Maybe a touch higher temp but not a "fever"

He is not pulling at his ears.

He is super drooly but shows no indication of any teeth poking through.

His Sleep is ok, maybe averaging one extra wakeup but easy to get back to sleep (knock on wood!)

I made the appointment because another mother suggested it could be an ear infection. But now I'm wondering if I should wait another day to see if he improves at all or at least wait to see his real pedi.

Thanks in advance for any input, thoughts and btdt knowledge!! :)

Eta: he has been a touch stuffy on and off at night. I wouldn't say he has had a runny nose or cold.

  • Did he have a cold? Ds1 only got an ear infection after a cold. Apparently that's when they usually get them. If there hasn't been a cold I would think it's something else.my son was always fussy when he had one and he grabbed at his ears. Lying down would be painful for him too.

  • My LO just had her first ear infection and it started with just a runny nose and a couple of days later she started draining from her eye and started waking up screaming and being very fussy while being fed and just overall cranky. Good luck tomorrow and definitely just take your LO to the pedi for peace of mind. Ear infections are no fun so hopefully it's just teething.
  • Thank you all for sharing. I'm definitely taking him in. I don't know that I think it is an ear infection, but honestly... I have no idea. As it was mentioned, at least for peace of mind. I'm thinking it's teething. We shall see! Fingers crossed. Thanks again!
  • DD had a few random "fussy at the breast" days recently that are similar to what you described. It went away as randomly as it came. No ear infection, no teeth - nothing to explain it. It just happens every once in awhile that she has a few fussy days.

Since you have an appointment, you should go for peace of mind. FX that it's nothing. The only ear infection experience we've had was minor. DS pulled at his ears and was kind of fussy. The infection was very mild. He was older (around a year), so I don't have experience with it at this age.

  • I'm a ftm mom so no first hand knowledge but I did ask LO's pedi about ear infections recently. She explained that they usually happen after a cold because the mucus blocks the fluid from draining in the ear and that typically ear infections cause fevers and grabbing at ears/fussiness.

It kinda sounds like LO might have one but also maybe not? I think at this stage everything is a guessing game to some extent :). No harm in bringing him in to get it checked if your concerned :)
  • These things can be really hard to tell so it's good you're bringing him in.  My oldest has a tell - a fever.  99% of the time if he has a fever, he has an ear infection but he doesn't pull at his ears at all.  He just got one last week and it was the first time he's ever said his ear actually hurt (obviously the littles can't anyway lol)
