NBR: Property Taxes

I've been contemplating how ridiculous property taxes are in my area. I'm curious about the numbers in different areas.

Where do you live and what do you pay in property taxes each year?

If you'd rather not share your own specifics (or like myself, you don't own), what's the ballpark in your area?

Re: NBR: Property Taxes

  • I live on Long Island in NY. Suffolk County taxes average about $10K a year. Nassau (the other county on Long Island) is even higher.

  • I'm originally from NY too and we honestly couldn't afford a house there, at least not a nice house. Maybe a condo. We live in NC now and taxes are much less. I think a break down is roughly 1-1.5% of the value of your house. So a $200,000 house would be about $2,000 a year give or take depending on the county. We live in one of the more expensive counties so we're a little over 1%. Hope that helps

I am an hour from Detroit and pay about 5%, a block over, same school district, is about 7.5 %.

edit: because Jack decided I was done with that post before I did.

  • I live in the Catskill region of upstate NY and our property taxes (in the village) are roughly 2.9%, or $3500 in our case.

  • I live in Philly but rent. We are house hunting in cherry hill nj and the taxes are ridiculous. For a $300k house it's about $10-13k a year. :(
  • I live in Minneapolis and we pay $2500 or about 1.45%

  • I live in South western Ont. Canada. I pay about 1.25%

  • We live in NY. About 15-20 min outside NYC in Westchester County. Our taxes are $17,000. Needless to say we're house hunting in CT and NJ because taxes are just ridiculous here and the school system where we live isn't even that great.

  • We just bought in Washington, and the property taxes are about 1% of the house's worth in that county. The home we own in upstate New York is a little higher than that.
  • In my area of CA we pay 4k for a 300k house.

Absolutely crazy. We do live in a nice quiet area but the sick part is compared to other towns next to ours it isn't that bad. We're looking in really nice areas of NJ and taxes are at least half of that. We are literally getting robbed.

  • Wow, ours is cheap in comparison. We live in a northern Michigan resort town, which is fairly expensive as far as MI is concerned. I just did the math and our taxes are less than 1% of what our house is worth.

Ours is 3.6% of the cost of our house. We pay for the better school district, pretty much.
    ETA Chicago suburb
  • 3.9% in Orange County CA. We are in a beach community and have a great school district.
  • We pay about 1% on our home in Virginia Beach. Luckily, our tax assessment is lower than market value by a lot, so we don't end up paying as much as we expected.

I'm also in the Chicago suburbs and we have good schools but my taxes are about 2% of the cost of my house. I'm curious which burb you're in, @Trish625!

I am in northern KY and pay 3%. We are supposedly in the #1 school district in the state. If you go 10-20 min south then you only pay 1-1.5%.

In Albany a house going for 150, 000 pays about 5000-6000. Ridiculous.

Both DH and I are originally from Albany and we couldn't afford to move back to Albany county. My sister eventually bought in the Shen school district in Saratoga county. DHs parents sold their house and moved to Virginia and they pay 1/3 of what they did back in NY.
