Croup

I apologize if this has been discussed. I'm mobile and don't know if I can search (or how to). DD was diagnosed with the croup today. It's totally, totally awful. Anyone else experience this? I feel so powerless, all we can do is sit her by the humidifier and give her Tylenol. She's miserable and so are we.

Re: Croup

  • I don't think you need to give Tylenol. It just sounds terrible, but I don't think it is Tylenol worthy unless LO seems uncomfortable. Try to push nursing/formula to increase hydration, incline in the crib (you can buy a wedge), use a cold mist humidifier, and Baby rub from Vicks. I kept LO in my room in the PnP, so I could monitor her. Just trust your mama instincts and follow all the info from the doctor. It is scary, but you will both get through it. Also, it sounds the worst at night and first thing in the morning. You will need to remind yourself of that, or you'll freak yourself out. Hang in there and get well soon.

  • Cold air helps! If it gets bad tonight, bundle her up and go outside and let her breathe the cold air in - assuming you live somewhere cold!

Thanks! Our humidifier is cold mist. We are in Sourhern California so not much cold night air out here but the pedi did say to leave the windows open and bundle her up. I was giving Tylenol because she had a fever and she is in pain (she winces and cries every time she coughs). I was just giving a half dose though. She got a steroid injection today and sees her doctor again tomorrow.

  • My LO just got diagnosed with croup today, it's awful. She got oral decodron which is a steroid this morning and she seems to be getting better. Although she's very restless I think it's from the steroid.

Oh no! I'm sorry you're dealing with it too. It's so hard hearing the wheezing and coughing. Glad your LO seems to be improving already

  • DS had it a few times. We just used the humidifier and Tylenol if he seemed u ncomfortable. Hopefully it will pass soon. Good luck!
  • Thanks for all the tips! She had to get another round of steroids, this time orally. Her case is particularly bad. She's doing better than yesterday but still pretty sick. It's been hard. Just thankful to see little improvements! Her pediatrician says she'll be much better tomorrow or Thursday.
