March 2014 Moms

Get that a** to the gym, ladies

My first thought was: I hope DH doesn't see this and nag me! Srsly though, how many of us are exercising regularly? I will admit I have only worked up a sweat once since BFP.

Exercising During Pregnancy Will Make Baby Smarter   https://blog.thebump.com/2013/11/13/exercising-during-pregnancy-will-make-baby-smarter/?cm_ven=Responsys&cm_cat=BumpNews&cm_ite=November 19, 2013

The latest study finds that expectant moms should get as little as 20 minutes of exercise in at least three times a week if they want a smarter baby. The study, presented at the Neuroscience 2013 conference over the weekend, was aimed at moving exercise when you’re expecting to the forefront of every mom-to-be’s mind.

For the study, researchers assigned 60 women to two random groups: The first was women who were provided with an exercise routine and the second was women who were not. All of the women were asked to keep a daily exercise log — and they also wore pedometers and accelerometers so that researchers could keep track of their level of activity.

Once the women gave birth, researchers recorded each newborn’s brain activity levels at 8 through 12 days of life. Élise Labonté-LeMoyne, study researcher, said, “We measured directly the brain activity, so it’s not a behavioral test or neuropsychologic test, it’s really specifically the brain that we were looking at.” And their findings supported the hypothesis that babies of moms who exercised had brains that were more fully developed.

So, how does the study match up against the current recommendations for moms-to-be? It gives women a little bit more flexibility in their prenatal workout routines, so you can feel good about exercising less. Current guidelines from the American College of of Obstetrics and Gynecologists state that pregnant women should exercise about 30 minutes daily.

Re: Get that a** to the gym, ladies

  • I've been on pelvic rest forever. I promised myself I would exercise this pregnancy, unlike the last. Once the HG passed, I was immediately on pelvic rest. I try to at least not be lazy, but I'm definitely not exercising. Boo.
  • Loading the player...
  • I walk to and from the train to work every day, and I try to get a little walking done at lunch too.

Other than that, I can count on *maybe* both hands the number of times I've exercised - and I used to be one of those people who got up to go to the gym at 5:30am before work every day. I keep saying I'm going to break out that prenatal yoga dvd but I can't even manage that. :\">

  • Once I was diagnosed with PP at 13 weeks I totally stopped. At 19 weeks it had resolved itself. I have gone running (and I use that term loosely) 3 times in the last 2 weeks. I told myself I would 3x a week now that I can. However, I got so used to being lazy and now it's cold outside!

  • I have an elliptical upstairs in our house, and I work from home most of the time. I really have no excuse other than laziness.  Should I just exercise now in my regular clothes?  I probably won't be breaking a sweat anyway!

  • Nope, not exercising. I have a treadmill but my hips hurt so bad usually that I don't want to attempt it. Not to mention, by the end of the night I am too exhausted after getting my 3 year old to bed to care.
  • I'm trying to be more active this pregnancy to help me be stronger for labor but if this is true its a nice perk too! I've been doing 45-60 min water aerobic classes and trying to go 3-5 times a week. It's my "me" time during the day and almost every time I go I get a peaceful shower while DS is in the child watch.

Get home walk up 3 flights of stairs to take our dogs out, cook dinner, clean up, IM tired or call me lazy if you will BUT working out is not on my list bc I'm exhausted !! BUT we do try and walk a couple times a week just to stay somewhat " in shape ". And I try to watch what I eat and try not to cave too much into my cravings !

See... I would just count walking up and down 3 flights of stairs and walking the dog as your workout. Done. :)

  • oh no another thing to make me feel bad... I was quite fit and active when I had my ds's and they are brainiacs if I do say so... maybe I'll take a look at my schedule and get motivated to do a little... uhm probably not
  • Futuremrstonyasmith I have a similar drive to work, does it kill your back or add to the swelling?

I sit at work and go to the gym after and I come home and still have swelling. ( I do the elliptical and core stuff) I was trying to pinpoint the swelling but I just went and bought compression socks. Has anyone been sitting all day and working out and still have swelling? Any tips on how to prevent swelling? I've been drinking water like a camel and keep the feet elevated...

  • I had every intention of walking regularly with this pregnancy, however I have been put on limited activity due to cervix issues and specifically told to not exercise and be the biggest couch potato. Sorry baby, better luck outside the womb!

  • I'm exercising. I hate it, but i do it. It's not like a sweat filled hour long session every day. Fuck that. I'm up at 5:15am every day and usually eating dinner by 6ish. That gives me two hours of chores + free time before I shower and go to bed.

I usually squeeze 20 minutes of stair climbing at work + lunges at each floor. I'll walk the dog around the neighborhood (another 20 mins; our area is only up or down hills), or I'll try 20 mins of yoga. Nothing intense, but something just enough to get my heartrate up for a while.
  • I do not work out. But I never did before I got pregnant either. I certainly don't just sit around all day. Maybe all the things I do throughout the day count as a workout somehow.

Oh, and happy V-day to us tomorrow!

  • I do a prenatal yoga class every Saturday. Then I try to do my workout video once or twice a week (this part doesn't always happen). Then we go on walks around the block once or twice a week (our block is about a mile).
I used to work out 4 times a week. I had even lost 10 lbs this year before I got pregnant. I feel lazy now.

  • I'm still exercising, but am constantly bargaining with myself that if I keep it up just a few more weeks, I can stop in third tri (and I will).  Exercising during pg sucks so hard.  Pre-pg I worked out hard and enjoyed it as a major stress relief.  Now it's just torture - can't catch my breath, can't do over half of what I used to, adds soreness on top of my soreness.  This ish is definitely on the way out.

  • I prefer to swap my 30 minutes a day with a salad.

And my pelvic bones feel like they are splitting in half, so no thanks. I think I'll buy an old people chair exercise video.

    Yes!

My pelvic bones feel like they are being torn apart too! Also I've given thought to the old lady chair exercise cause I'm just not up for a challenge. Its been a successful day if I skip my evening nap and or make dinner for my people.

  • And here I was feeling bad about not exercising. I take my dogs for a 30 minute walk/speed walk every other day, weather permitting, and then swim laps for 45 mins once a week. I don't go to the gym as much as I used to or as much as I would like, but I'm glad to know I'm not being a total slacker, like I thought I was. At least for now... we will see how long I continue this routine when it starts snowing, or when school starts back up in January.

  • I really thought I was going to open this and hate myself! I'm so happy most of us seem to be in the same page. I do yoga very occasionally and walk every once in a while. Before this I was in the shape of my life, going to the gym every single day. Now, no thank you! I always manage to find an excuse not to.
  • I just can't do much more than walk or some "lifting" with DD when she wants to roughhouse. And even then I start to get dizzy and feel weird. I try to keep in motion a good part of the day and figure that's enough. Sometimes a brisk walk around the mall if DD will stay in her stroller.

  • I'm so glad someone started this thread because the other ones with the super fit women were making me feel so guilty. I started to feel like I was such a bad mom to be because I wasn't exercising but I work almost 60 hrs a week and my hips have been hurting for the past few weeks. I honestly don't have time. I do walk to the train and from the train to work though so hopefully that counts.
