A different solids Q

For those of you who have started solids, what brands are you feeding LO?

Have you tried making your own?

To you like the tubs or pouches better?

What foods does LO like best?

How often does s/he get food?

How has solids effected (affected? I get those mixed up!) (i.e. poop, sleep, milk intake, etc.)?

Any funny stories yet??

  • Right now Ellie is getting Gerber veggies and fruits but we have some Mott's applesauce.

I haven't had time to try making our own food but I want to.

I like the tubs at home but the pouches are great for being on the go. They seem to be less messy.

She LOVES apples and does not like peas at all.

She eats 1-2 times at the sitters and once at home right now. I havent been the best at keeping with it. It's a good thing it's not her only source of nutrition.

Ellie is a pooping machine now. She goes within 30 mins of eating food. Some how solids has made her up her milk intake. I don't get that one. lol

No really funny stories yet. Just some peas spit in my face.

  • What brands are you feeding LO?  I mostly buy Gerber for stage 1s

Have you tried making your own?  I've made applesauce, sweet potatoes and squash so far

To you like the tubs or pouches better?  Tubs for stage ones but the pouches are awesome for different blends later and are awesome at getting veggies into a picky kid down the road

What foods does LO like best? So far he loves every single thing he's had and grabs the spoon and shoves it in his mouth

How often does s/he get food? Once a day but I just sent some to daycare for the first time so he'll probably start getting it twice a day.  I'm casual about it.  Either way is fine :)

How has solids effected (affected? I get those mixed up!) (i.e. poop, sleep, milk intake, etc.)?  No changes at all

Any funny stories yet??  He just gets insanely excited when he sees the spoon :)

  • For those of you who have started solids, what brands are you feeding LO? gerber

Have you tried making your own? yes, it's a ton of work so I probably won't do it again

To you like the tubs or pouches better? tubs

What foods does LO like best? anything orange (squash, carrots, sweet potatoes) and bananas

How often does s/he get food? fruit and cereal in the morning, vegetable in the afternoon. We will soon be adding another solid meal for the day after speaking with the pedi at 6 months. I'm going to do fruit & cereal for breakfast, vegetable for lunch, and then something with meat for dinner.

How has solids effected (affected? I get those mixed up!) (i.e. poop, sleep, milk intake, etc.)? Her formula intake is the same. I usually let her have a bottle as her "drink" when she's eating solids. She likes to have a couple of spoonfuls and then a sip from her bottle and then more spoonfuls, etc. Too many Bananas will bind her but Prunes straighten that right out. I find she goes down easier for naps after she's had solids.

Any funny stories yet?? Nothing in particular but I love watching the faces she makes when we try something new. It's priceless.

    Anniversary

  • For those of you who have started solids, what brands are you feeding LO?

I make all her food but I have Earths Best on hand.

Have you tried making your own?

    See above

To you like the tubs or pouches better?

Haven't tried pouches yet, will wait until DD is older

What foods does LO like best?

    Apples and Butternut Squash

How often does s/he get food?

Once mid morning and once around dinner

How has solids effected (affected? I get those mixed up!) (i.e. poop, sleep, milk intake, etc.)?

He poop is firmer and her spitting up has stopped. She's a reflux baby.

    Any funny stories yet??

She's vocal about her love of food. After a few bites she's all "mmmmmmmyuuuuuumooonnnuum"

I do about half and half. I will either mix it together or do a few bites of one and then a few of the other.

  • what brands are you feeding LO?
We've done Earth's Best and Ella's or something like that. It's at Walmart in the pouch.

Have you tried making your own? No way.

To you like the tubs or pouches better? I like pouches. I just squeeze it out on the spoon, and I can put the cap back on and put it the fridge if he doesn't eat it all, which he never does at this point.

What foods does LO like best? He like sweet potatoes, butternut squash, any fruit blends.

How often does s/he get food? Once a day or sometimes every other day. We're not pushing it at this point.

How has solids effected (affected? I get those mixed up!) (i.e. poop, sleep, milk intake, etc.)? Sleeping just as bad as he did before. Pooping every 3 days now instead of 2.
  • I haven't started yet, so I'm gonna answer with a mixture of what I plan on doing and what I did last time

For those of you who have started solids, what brands are you feeding LO? I like Ella's Kitchen, Sprout, and Plum Organics (but with their recent recall, I might be a little more skeptical with this one)

Have you tried making your own? Yes! I made some pearsauce Sunday and I usually do sweet potatoes, bananas, avocados, and mangoes (when they are in-season). Once they start eating more than once/day and the combos get more exotic I lose interest...

To you like the tubs or pouches better? pouches are the BEST! There's even a spoon attachment to pouches that Plum makes that I love

What foods does LO like best? Bradley would eat anything if I mixed it with applesauce. He preferred carrots to other orange veggies and his favorite green veggie was always spinach. And there has never been a fruit he didn't like. Prunes were a big early hit too (great to do the week after bananas...)

How often does s/he get food? Bradley did 1 new food 1 time/day for about a month, then it quickly went to twice a day and then 3 times/day...like a lot faster than I expected

How has solids effected (affected? I get those mixed up!) (i.e. poop, sleep, milk intake, etc.)? It never changed his milk intake (he still drinks milk like it's water) and it didn't change his sleep, but his poop got LOTS stinkier

Any funny stories yet?? we gave Ty a taste of the pearsauce yesterday and his eyes turned into quarters when he saw the spoon...I'm just waiting until he can sit up a little better because our high chair doesn't have the support for a non-sitter

  • For those of you who have started solids, what brands are you feeding LO? If we buy any, I'll probably get Gerber.

Have you tried making your own? Yes, I made all of DD1's food.  Except applesauce, I just buy the big jars that are natural and unsweetened.

To you like the tubs or pouches better?  Whichever is cheaper.

What foods does LO like best?  Sweet potatoes!

How often does s/he get food? 1-2 times a day.  Mainly to keep her occupied in the high chair while the rest of us eat.  But only when we're home, we don't do solids when we're out and about yet.

How has solids effected (affected? I get those mixed up!) (i.e. poop, sleep, milk intake, etc.)?  Definitely more frequent poop.  She was pooping only every five days or so when she was on BM only.

Any funny stories yet??  She flaps her arms like crazy when she sees me coming at her with food.  Makes for a mess sometimes, but it's too cute!

  • These stories are getting me really excited about Ben starting solids. So cute! He's completely mesmerized with people eating. Just stares at us so hard. We started pretending to put food up to his mouth and initially he did nothing but now he leans in to try to bite. Then I feel bad. Lol. Today he was freaking out in his jumper when I was crunching on chips and salsa. Thought it was hilarious. I think meal time is going to be a big hit at our house.
  • Ugh this thread just makes me nervous/sad. Every time I've tried giving Riley solids, she gags, spits it out, and cries. She's gotten a little better and did pretty good with peaches over the weekend.

Has anyone else went through this? We've tried MANY times. My cousin who watches her while I'm at work tries about 3 times a week and we've been going at it for a couple weeks now. I'm thinking it's just too early for her. I'm not too worried yet because she's just a little over 5 months but it seems like she's going to take a bottle forever! Any suggestions?

  • @WasNotWas That's what I'm thinking too. I wasn't worried until I saw everyone saying how their babies love to eat! She actually started trying to slurp some off the spoon last time I tried some so I think she is just taking a while to get the hang of it!

We haven't started and Ty was 5 months yesterday. I am in NO RUSH.

  • @mrsauby she's just not ready and that's totally normal! it's not actually recommend to start solids until 6 months and babies should get around something like 90% of their calories from breast milk or formula for 12 months. So if a year is forever, yes she will be taking a bottle forever. I try not to get involved when people feed their babies solids early, but it really upsets me when they start replacing bottles with food before a year.

@nykkolhooksI definitely was not trying to replace bottles. I know food before one is just for fun :)

I just thought she would think it was more fun! haha. Thanks for reminding me that it's normal though!

  • @MrsAuby Just take it slow. If she doesn't like being spoon fed purées just let her taste things. Let her lick and explore. It's not about forcing food into her right now, it's just learning, so if they aren't receptive, take a step back.
Thanks @zigspective. I was planning on taking a step back/break from it and trying again in a month or so. It just surprised me how many babies were eating so much already!

  • For those of you who have started solids, what brands are you feeding LO? Plum and gerber

Have you tried making your own? Yes, playing with consistency as he keeps making gagging noises and spitting it out

To you like the tubs or pouches better? The spoon for the pouch is handy but he doesn't like the shape

What foods does LO like best? Butternut squash, applesauce, and bananna

How often does s/he get food? Right now just at dinner. Might change at 6 month

How has solids effected (affected? I get those mixed up!) (i.e. poop, sleep, milk intake, etc.)? Various made him throw up...bananas constipated

Any funny stories yet?? Nope. He is pretty good with eating

Not all pediatricians suggest holding off on solids until 6 months. Actually, I believe it's a fairly new suggestion. Ben started at 4 months and he drinks the same amount of formula as he did pre-solids. Every baby is different.

  • My pedi recommended it at 4 months, but we just started this week and he friggen loves it! I have mashed up fresh banana and fresh avocado and he eats all of it! He was weird with the chunks at first, but he's used to it now, which makes me happy because dd took forever to get used to chunks since we did stage 1- stage 3 foods. I might skip stage 2 this time and make my own food. He still gets the formula he needs, and guess what?

    It IS fun.
  • I really want to start giving LO a taste of solids but daddy says no. :( only because we will be out of insurance for about a week since he changed jobs. She turns 6 mo this Friday and is trying to grab food off my plate. She opens her mouth for an empty spoon. And she sits independently for several minutes at a time... The only thing is, I think she still has her tongue thrust reflex because her little tongue pops out when I give her vitamin d drops in the morning. :) but once insurance kicks in again we are starting! And I can't wait to see how she does. :)

  • For those of you who have started solids, what brands are you feeding LO? Gerber oats, homemade produce

Have you tried making your own? For a certain value of "homemade" sure. I cook and puree things that need it, or mash them up.

To you like the tubs or pouches better? I freeze in ice cube trays

What foods does LO like best? Oatmeal, carrots, sweet potatoes. Not a huge fan of avocadoes. She likes cinnamon. And loves butter.

How often does s/he get food? About three times a day. As often as we can basically.

How has solids effected (affected? I get those mixed up!) (i.e. poop, sleep, milk intake, etc.)? Her poop is nasty now! Sweet potatoes also seem to constipate her, which is sad because she loves them :(

Any funny stories yet?? Just that she's finally gaining weight like she should be :)

And ITA with @glitterbush, babies are all different. Nova is five months but for her solids are not just for fun -- she has serious eating issues and was not growing. Solids are really helping her and her pedi is thrilled. That's also why she gets butter on everything, helps to fatten her up!

  • -We just do homemade :)
-After seeing the mold inside pouches, I will never buy them!
-We feed LO once a day, mainly because she is inconsistent with really eating much. I am curious when others usually up this amount.

Our doctor recommended we start at 4 months - supposedly the new thinking to protect against allergies.  I was weary of this, and started a little after 5 months.
