And one more question - baby gates

We have a free-standing staircase in our house (meaning, entrance to the stairway is not in between two walls, if that makes sense), and then another staircase going down to the basement that DOES have walls on either side.

Can you recommend your baby gates?

Thanks<
Jess

Re: And one more question - baby gates

  • I'd get a pressure gate for the stair's with walls.  I'd do a playpin type gate around the bottom of the stairs for the freestanding ones.

What do you mean by playpen type gate? Is that a specific type you can look up?  Sorry if that sounds dumb, but the Babies R Us website has been frustrating with showing different kinds of gates and how they work.
(Sorry for hijacking your thread, Jess, but I had the same question.)

Pressure gates should never be used at the top of stairs. They can pop out of the way if leaned on and cause baby to fall down the stairs. Gates at the bottom of the stairs can be pressure gates, but gates at the top should be screwed in and secured. For the top of the stairs, you can drill into the bannister or use industrial size/strength zip ties.

  • We have a set of stairs to our basement with a solid wood door that is almost always kept closed unless we are running down to get something. No need for a gate on it, correct?

You can make it one long piece/wall or put it around something like a fireplace or staircase

I REALLY did not want to drill into our banister and couldn't wrap my brain around it just being a "playpen" type thing that would easily move around.

At least until baby is tall enough to open the door themsleves.  My 2.5 yo can open the door to the garage.  We have those knob covers on most doors we don't want him to get through, but not that one. And so far those knob covers work great (for how long?  Who knows!)   Instead, because we really don't want him to breach it, we have a dead bolt with keyed entry on both sides of the door.  So nothing he can just flip to unlock, He'd need the house key to get out.  There are chemicals and fertilizers out there plus a crap ton of power tools.  So keeping him out is a major priority.  Because I have to travel to get my keys, I want to post on up high where he can't reach so it's more convient to get out into the garage, and also to have it closer in case of fire or something.

TTC since May 2006. After 3 failed Clomid cycles, 2 failed Injectibles/IUIs, 2 failed IVFs and 1 failed FET, we moved on to adoption!
