Re: Spender vs Saver

  • I am a saver. I love transferring money to the savings account and watching it grow.

My husband can think of a million ways to spend it. It mostly involves hunting or something with the boat

Are we married to the same man?

I am far better at saving than him. If we don't NEED anything, I'll put the extra money in savings. He's a gadget man, but now that we're on a stricter budget he's learning not to buy things we don't really need on impulse.

  • I try to save, but I can still easily spend.  I just know that I need to be careful because I can easily overspend.  H has much more expensive hobbies than I do, so yea, he spends.
  • Saving money is like an addiction of mine. It sometimes involves me spending the money I saved though. Haha. I wouldn't consider dh a spender, but he isn't as frugal as I am.

  • I can do both!

If I know we are saving for something specific I can be frugal and smart with money.

When we aren't and just saving for bills and the usual expenses- I may splurge a bit more. Nothing crazy.

    I hope not, ha.

I never knew how expensive hunting was till I married a hunter. I thought they just rolled in the dirt and stood in the woods.  There is a lot more

  • I like to save. DH likes to spend. He has expensive hobbies so just by that alone he spends a lot more than I do. I also like a good deal, so I'll wait to buy something if it means getting the best deal on it. DH on the other hand, wants what he wants and now.

  • I sort of go on spending sprees, but they are not sudden. I think for a long time about purchases, but when I make up my mind...watch out. I just bought several things to hang on the walls in the playroom, but I have been thinking about what I wanted for over a year. I didn't exactly save for these purchases, but I waited to make sure of what I really wanted. DH is similar.

  • I hate to move $$ to savings just in case we need it.
I am definitely the more frugal of us.
He always needs cash in his pocket, but we both spend it if we have it.
  • We are a little of both. We make sure we have enough in savings to be responsible, but we both enjoy spending our money. We work hard and we like to play hard. I'm the only one that likes to shop though, he spends on big ticket items like season tickets, soccer leagues, fishing gear and vacations and pretty much nothing else. I don't have expensive hobbies, but I like to buy clothes for myself and the kids, home decor and random cheaper things that add up. I'd say we are spenders at heart, but responsible enough to be savers too. We know how to lock it up and live on a budget if we have to, but we try to keep our fixed expenses lower so we have a lot of fun money.
  • I am the spender of a million little things. DH is the spender of a few big things a year. In the end it evens out.

  • DH is the saver. I'm the spender. I think we help each other and we're a good balance. I baby-sit about 12 to 15 hours a week and use this as my spending money for extras.
  • I think we're both in between. We both like having money in savings and set a goal for every month. We put money into savings before we spend on anything unessential. But we both also like to have things so we do spend pretty frequently. It took us awhile to find a good middle ground.

  • I am the saver and he is the spender. I pay all the bills and have been putting a good amount in savings. He had no idea how much we had in savings until a couple weeks ago and now he wants to go on a trip with some of our savings. It drives me crazy.

  • One of the things that attracted us to each other was our cheapness. <3 We're both savers. (But I'm still better at it. *grin*)

  • I tend to be a spender, though I also love saving too.  I just spend a bit more often than I save.  It is something I am working on.

  • In the scheme of things, we're both savers. But I'm more likely to spend money than he is (especially since I'm back to work - it's too easy to spend money on work clothes!).

  • Gah, I wish I was better at saving. He's definitely the saver in our family, and I'm always the one like, "Ooh, look, we need this!" It's terrible. :P

  • We 're both spenders...we ended up having to see a financial counselor and get put on a budget. It wasn't pretty. We're much better now though.
  • What do they do? just look at your finances and bills and tell you how much to spend and where?

  • We both are spenders unfortunately but I am definitely more of a saver than he is.

We are both savers...but I agree with Kimbus that we have our splurges; I think everyone does.

  • I spend at least $50 a week at Target on who knows what, seriously.

Doesn't everyone do this? Target is a black hole where money just disappears. I can't get out of that place for less than $30 even if I just went in for a tin of mints.

Mostly. She figured out our income vs. expenses and set up a budget, using most of our "extra" money to pay down bills. We still had some play money, though, because otherwise we'd go nuts. She budgeted our bi-weekly allowances for groceries, gas, etc., and put us on a cash only envelope system. The envelope thing didn't really work for us, but it at least gave us a better idea of our spending habits.
