Crib Sleeping

Well my LO has been doing great going to sleep and sleeping in his crib the past few weeks. The last couple nights it has been horrible trying to get him to sleep! I rock him to sleep and as soon as I lay him down the eyes pop right open so then we repeat... I'm just wondering is it too soon maybe for the crib or do I keep going in rocking and re-rocking!?!? I just am running out of ideas! Suggestions would be lovely lol!

Re: Crib Sleeping

  • How long are you waiting to put LO down? When they first fall asleep they're usually in a fairly light sleep state. If you wait a bit longer with LO in arms you might have better success. Wait til you can lift and drop their arm and get that classic deep sleep lack of response. Alternately, consider trying letting LO wake up when you lay them in the crib and using a "shh-pat" to get them used to falling asleep in the crib.

  • I recommend the shh pat as pp mentioned. This is from the baby whisperer. Studies show that babies who fall asleep in their cribs as opposed to before they are laid in their cribs sleep better and longer.
  • Yup, put him in his room awake. :)

  • One tip from a STM: while rocking him, keep a burp cloth on your shoulder between you and him. When you lay him down, lay the burp cloth kinda under the side of his face or just next to him. It'll have your smell and warmth on it. DS2 often opens his eyes while dreaming, so I second PPs advice about walking out. It's so important for them to learn to self soothe. Don't always pick him up at the first grunt. Give it a few minutes.

  • Thank y'all for all the advice!! I let me grunt and talk but he will start crying and that is when I usually go in! I pick him up but tonight I will try the patting and talking to him instead!! Do your LOs nap in cribs during the day as well??? My LO is still at the stage where he sleeps A LOT of the day just didn't know if letting him sleep in the crib some throughout the day would help?!?
  • I agree with pp. If he isn't crying just see if he will go to sleep on his own. Or rock him longer if you think you aren't doing it long enough.

  • Well night before last the talking and patting to him did not work at all... So I picked him up and calmed him that way then tried again!
Then last night I bathed him and fed him, we rocked him a little longer last night and that worked like a charm!
Thank y'all so much for all the useful input! Love these boards for that reason!!!
  • The cold sheet could be waking him up. You could try a heating pad to warm his spot while you rock, then of course remove the pad before you lay him down.

This. I wait until I can open her hand without her clenching her fist back up.
