Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Stage 1 meats at 5-6 months???

Pediatrition told me to start DS on stage one foods and cereal when he was 4 months.  He also said fruits or vegetables.  I bought stage one chicken and turkey not thinking to try something new.  Would it be okay to give meats since it is stage 1 or would you stay away?

  • jarred meats are sooo gross! We skipped them.

  • Jar meats gross me out.
  • It's probably okay, but I'd generally start with something else. The meats, even Stage 1, are more thick/gelatinous than fruits and veggies so generally it's a good idea to wait till a baby is a little experienced with solids before introducing them.

FWIW, my daughter absolutely hated all of the jarred meats (we started at 6mos after veggies) so we ended up skipping them. She got her protein from breastmilk and baby yogurt (YoBaby is awesome!) instead.

  • I make my own baby food, but I started beef and chicken around 7 months.  It's a wonderful source of iron and better absorbed than most other sources.
  • Where I live in Canada, public health is instructing us to start with meats actually! Meats or lentils/chickpeas. I decided to start with cereal though.  I would just make my own pureed meat with breastmilk (or formula) if I were you.

  • I never gave my kids the meats. Nasty.

  • I personally plan on skipping the jarred meats, the thought of them just makes me want to gag. Plus who knows the quality of the meat and what kind of hormones are in them.  I would definitely do veggies and fruits and if you want to give your baby meat, puree it yourself so you can get organic or at least the kind without a bunch of hormones in it.
