I'm not sure I can keep this up...

I have 17 oz of BM in the freezer and 9 oz in the fridge. I need 16 oz for daycare tomorrow. My supply has been dropping steadily, it's SUPER hard to find time to pump at work, my house is falling apart, I have no time to spend with DD1 because I'm nursing constantly and my baby is fussy all the time. I started some cereal today in a last ditch effort to fill her belly a little more, but even that needs BM to make. LO is healthy and has grown well, but I just don't know if I can keep doing this.

I don't know why I am feeling SO guilty about this. My first DD was 99 percent formula fed. I know formula is fine. I almost feel like quitting now means I wasted the last 6 months trying so hard.

How do I go about the transition to formula?

Why would quitting now be a waste of the last six months? You've done a lot in terms of providing your child with breast milk and now you have to do what will work to continue feeding your child. It's just formula it's not pinesol or turpentine. And who knows maybe giving her some formula will allow you to find time to pump one good bottle a day and then she's getting both. Honestly it's nbd to give your child some formula if they are hungry.

  • *hugs* you know I'm in the same place so I'm going to try and help a little with your transition question. J has been slowly getting more and more formula as we've gone on. Have you tried formula yet?
  • Maybe just use formula to mix the cereal? I think a lot of moms on this board are putting too much pressure on themselves about BF that it has to be all or nothing. To me, that would make it unbearable! I've been using my $5 Similac coupons to buy the 2 oz. ready made formula bottles that they sell at Walmart for $6. For $1 out of my pocket I have 8 bottles of formula ready to go if I need them to mix cereal. I haven't had to use them yet, but honestly I think knowing I have a back up plan on hand has allowed me to stay stress free about the working and pumping/BF. Don't put so much pressure on yourself! If at some point you need to use formula it doesn't somehow wipe out all the months you've been giving BM. Give yourself some credit. =D>

    This!

Big hugs, You've done fantastic to be still BFing so many months as shantxtell says. Don't be so hard on yourself. As long as your baby has a full tummy (with whatever) you're doing a great job.

  • Thanks everyone, you are all right. I guess the reason I was feeling the first 6 months were a wash was because my goal was a year. But that was a lofty goal and I know I''m being ridiculous. I already feel guilty for having her in daycare 10 hours a day and for a thousand other things that I feel like I did so much better the first time around (like the fact that I haven't filled out her baby book in months or the fact that she has been read to like...twice.) Breastfeeding was the one thing I really felt I could do right for her. But you ladies are right...the right thing to do for her is feed her...however that food is packaged is fine. Thanks for the tips on formula! I did stock up on a few cans of similac with coupons and that's a great idea to buy the 6 dollar ready feed! Thanks again ladies.

  • Late to the game but wanted to say good for you for going this long. I'm struggling with supply too since AF returned and had to add formula in. I'll also add that I use warm water to make her cereal because BM is limited around here.

  • you sound exactly like me right now.  I only nursed my first for the first 2 1/2 months and this one we have made it this far, but I'm slowly getting tired of always have to schedule around pumping and my supply is slowly dwindling as well.  I don't have advice, but I know how you feel
