Mold smell. Bottle.

How do I get mold smell out of a bottle!? The bottle was forgotten and it grew mold. I put it through the dishwasher but it still smells. What would get the odor out? Should I just toss it?

Re: Mold smell. Bottle.

  • I'd probably toss it, but bleach would be my suggestion.  10% solution.  Let it sit for 10-15 minutes, rinse with copious amounts of water then run through the dishwasher for good measure.  Bleach degrades pretty quickly when exposed to water.

  • I'd toss it but i'm super scary when it comes to stuff like that.  Do you have one of those microwavable steaming bags?

  • Yeah, steam could work too. Just doesn't have the pressure for a stubborn organism that you would need, but that would probably destroy the bottle too. I'm a microbiologist, so I love bleach.  10% solution, 10 minute contact time, kills everything!  Unfortunately it corrodes metal and bleaches fabrics...  But anything but fabric can usually stand a 10 minute one time soak. Hydrogen Peroxide kills everything too, 3% solution (probably pre-mixed in the drug store at that strength).

  • I would toss it. DD has had a few sippys that were forgotten and I just throw them out.
Same. I tried washing my DDs' old sippy cups with bleach, but I just couldn't bring myself to use them again, even after that.

  • I'd throw it out. Buying a new one would be way easier than trying to clean it.

  • Thanks guys! I'll try soaking it, if that doesn't work, I'll just toss it. I'm not worried about it being dirty still, that smell is gross though! Ick!
