MIL hounding us for baby name

My MIL is a super loving and gracious lady but she can also be overbearing, intrusive, and annoying. I guess it's part of being a MIL! Well anyway, she has been hounding us to come up with a name for the baby. She brings it up every single time we talk in person, on the phone, via text, or email. No matter what we're talking about she slips it in, "oh and pick a name for her already!" She then started calling her "Baby Girl [Our Last Name]" to annoy us into picking out a name. Finally, she's involved my family and complains to my mom that we don't have a name for the baby so now my mom is starting to ask us about the same things. DH and I made an announcement to the family -- We will be choosing some top names and then naming her after we meet her. End of story. She whined but that's that. It seems to be working for now.

  • Decoy name!  My parents referred to me as Rufus until I was born (and obviously not a boy).

I don't see why calling her "Baby Girl" is annoying.
Because she made it a point that, that was her default name because we hadn't named her quickly enough. So every time she calls her Baby Girl Smith she follows it up with "since you guys haven't named her yet." I've probably just been conditioned to perceive it as annoying because of that. I know she means well but it is frustrating.

  • I agree with a decoy name, but say it's not set in stone.

  • My MIL bugs us about it too. I've told her that I don't want to name him something and then see him and think "Holy Crap! That isn't going to work!" Then go into panic mode searching for A name that fits him. Decoy names sound like a great idea if it's stressing you out. I don't want my tummy to be called "Baby Joe" for the remainder of the pregnancy. I'm weird like that. I'm still me, use my name and please don't forget that I am here! My MIL just sees me as a "baby carrier."
  • My Dad has been calling our son Ray Ray until we decide, that has worked pretty well for us!

  • @Rad&Co Oh no... but the banner! hehehe... just kidding. I honestly think I might have been just as clueless if I wasn't pregnant myself.

  • I would even announce your top names. That way you won't get everyone's opinion. The way I look at your kid you get to name her. Your MIL got to name her kids.

  • We've had lots of luck with a decoy name.  The in utero name is Sharkie.  Everyone seems pretty on board, my moms already picked out her grandma nickname....which is weird to me.

  • I just keep telling everyone that we will get serious about picking a name when it gets closer to delivery time, and after we find out the sex. Then I'm going to use the excuse that we need to buy a book of greek names because the ones online aren't great (big fat greek family, so they will love that!). in the meantime, I'm calling LO 'little Sammy junior' (sam is DH's name) and DH often calls the baby by whatever fruit size I'm at this week. Honestly though, my fam has been really good about not bugging us about a name. I'm surprised they have been so hands off!

My MIL signs all her emails "nona" now which is weird to me because that's the Italian name for grandmother and she's from Spain... and a very proud Spaniard indeed!

yeah my mom went with Nanna....it bums me out because I always thought it was cutest when the little one picked it out (my cousin son called his grandma and grandpa Greema and Beepa)

Do you already have a LO that calls her Nanna? If not, your new baby may end up deciding what to call her anyway.
