Just 2 boy names

Originally our boy name was Mitchell, nickname Mitch. Upon further consideration, we started having second thoughts as our last name also begins with "Ch", in addition to the theme this will create with our sibset (all names end in -el). DH is super particular regarding boy names, but over the weekend we were able to come up with Cormac (nickname Mac) which we both like. What are your thoughts regarding this name in general, and furthermore as part of our sibset? Middle name will be James, which is FIL's name. TIA.

Re: Just 2 boy names

  • Interesting.  It's a very old traditional Irish name and we thought of it because of the famous author, Cormac McArthur.  DH and I aren't into pop culture at all, so the "big mac" and "mac daddy" references are lost on us.

  • I am not a fan of the name in general, but I do think it's lovely with your sibset.  Mac as a NN is adorable.

  • I did not vote because either are my style but Mitchell is way better

  • I love Cormac, probably from the author and my very southern double-name family with a lot of Macs in there as middle names. I think Mac is adorable and I like it with your other kiddos.

    Mac is an awful nickname.

Cormac is fine, if you're into Irish names, but I would never sentence my child to the nn "Mac."

ETA: I'm not into pop culture, I'm an English teacher literature nerd, and I don't watch TV at all, and even I know:  Big Mac, McDonald's, Mack Truck, "mac" as a generic male term like we use "guy" or "dude" today, Lightning McQueen's truck friend Mack.

These things may not be on your radar screen, but they will be on the minds of other kids your kid encounters.

    Err, you mean McCarthy?

I don't mind the NN Mac (DD had a classmate last year named Malcolm, NN Mac), and Mitchell just reminds me of MST3K - how's that for a pop culture reference? - so I voted for Cormac.

Umm, you don't have to be "into pop culture"  to know Big Mac... honestly, come on!

With that being said, I think Mac is a cute nn and I don't hate it.
On the other hand, I had a friend in high school who referred to her step dad as "Mitch the bitch"  to this day, it is the first thing I think of with name Mitchell, nn Mitch.

  • I like Cormac but when I say it it's more like Cor-Mick so Mac wouldn't be a natural nickname for me.
  • I prefer Mitchell.
