Previous epidural?

I had never had aay problems until now and I am sure it is probably the uterus expanding, but for the past few days I have had lower back pain right where I got the epidural when my son was born.

Anyone else every have pains in the epidural spot?

  • I couldn't even tell you where my epidural spot was.  My labor was so intense that I never felt it go in.  You might check with your OB to see if its "normal"?

  • Sady it is normal. Or at least not uncommon to have lasting pain and numbness from an epidural-even years later. I have it, too. Which is why I'm going to try really hard not to have one this time.

  • I wouldn't think it has anything to do with your back pain.  If you were going to have a problem it most likely would have shown up pretty soon after getting it.  There is a CRNA on here that would know more but I can't remember her name :( Plus you can ask your doctor.  I was pretty sore for almost a month after at that spot but not this far out.

  • Thanks ladies I'll be sure to ask my doctor because I've heard on on going numbness etc years later but after almost 2 years this is the first time I get this pain.

  • Yes! Funny you mention this. I had a really awful epidural experience last time and had pain at the site for 6 months after. I haven't had problems with it since but just the other day was having pain at the site just like I did then. So weird!

  • I had the most amazing epidural. I couldn't even tell you where it went it and I haven't had any pain/numbness.
Sorry you are going through this.
  • Hi! CRNA is me =] your back pain is most likely not related to your previous epi. That being said there are always those exceptions to the general rule. Usually epi back pain is immediate and fades with time sometimes completely away, sometimes just to a steady level, but to have it show up all of sudden sounds like you have something else going on. I would call your doctor just to touch base, it could be something as simple as a pulled muscle. I know its not an answer but I hope that helps =]

  • I had superficial numbness on my thigh for six months following my epidural because of nerve damage. It eventually healed and I've had no problems since. I have lower back pain periodically because of my previous pg and back labor, but it has nothing to do with my epidural.
