How early is too early (Childcare sign-up)....

I am just about 14 weeks and we know exactly what facility we would like to use next year.  Hopefully in September, when the baby is around 4-5 months old.
My previous DD started around 4 months there and we LOVED it.  I cried when she graduated from pre-k....

Thoughts on when is not crazytown to sign up?  We sort of stumbled along last time and lucked out with a spot, just a week before she started.  I know that a friend I referred when her kid was 2 had to go on a waiting list!

I just have paranoia that I am jumping to far ahead when things CAN go wrong :-(

How to balance the paranoia and the crazy?

Re: How early is too early (Childcare sign-up)....

  • I don't think its too early to start looking. Sometimes the waitlist can be insane.

  • Exactly!  I know they run it like a "school" year...So they "start" the year in September (even though it is a FT daycare/pre-k....a lot of the kids are teacher kids.  We used to get the registration papers in February and shake our heads at how early we had to "enroll."

Again, stupid FTM who just stepped in lucky shit ;-)

OK, I will call at the end of this week.  After my next doc appointment.
  • I put a deposit down for daycare at 8 weeks! At that time, they didn't even have any infant openings until October 1, so we're going to have to juggle childcare between the end of my leave and 10/1. So I'd say, sign up now!

  • Yeah, I don't think that is crazy. I have heard of places with 1 to 2 year wait lists.

  • how is that possible for a newborn??  I mean, 2 years?  That's total guesstimation.
  • I don't think it would hurt to call and find out.  Our d/c doesn't have wait lists since it's a YMCA and they don't get a huge influx of people so I'm not really in your boat but I'd say better safe than sorry.

  • We have been on the wait list for my hospitals daycare for about a month and a half now. I didn't want to miss out!

  • I registered this LO at DD's daycare to make sure he/she has a spot when were ready.

  • We got on a wait list for a place for DD when I was about 12weeks, and they called WHILE I WAS IN LABOR saying that they opened a new class and were offering me a spot- I had 24hrs to decide. I said no thank you, I had found something different. Just ask about their typical process. It really depends on location and your supply&demand of quality infant care.

  • I don't think there is anything wrong with signing up early. Why not?! When I worked in a daycare we had people sign up about a year before and we thought nothing of it . Especially if it was a family we had enrolled in the past. We loved when they came in to visit and enrolled there new baby.
  • I asked my current daycare how long the wait list was when I was 4 weeks and it was long enough that we put our names down then. We are guaranteed a spot 3 weeks after I come back from maternity so glad we didn't wait any longer. I would ask what their wait list is and gauge that way. We actually don't have to pay a fee until August since DD goes there now but our spot is held. No harm in asking.

  • Thanks for everyone's responses...I totally get it.  I am just still having that Italian Catholic superstition in me that doesn't want to get to crazy...until I know the baby is healthy...you know.

and 7 dollar day care!!!  I am very jealous.  We are looking at about $1450 a month AND because they close for all the school holidays...it can be a scramble...
  • I've been putting this off and I really need to get my ass in gear. I'm just dreading it because we're hoping to move before baby is here, but we don't yet know what area of the city that will be. So... I need to seek out and get on a list for, what, 5 different daycares within various radii of each neighborhood we're looking at? *sigh*

  • When I was pregnant with DS I enrolled him in Daycare in January of 2010, he wasn't born until July of 2010 and didn't start attending until October of 2010.  His school didn't think anything of it... At that point I didn't even know if I was having a boy or girl, so couldn't even put his name on any of the paperwork lol!

  • I would call and check their waiting list. The preschool I want to send DS to when he is 3 I have to sign up this March for and my son is only 17 months old right now.

  • I added our baby girl to the list at a daycare that is one block from my office. I started calling early and alot of places told me I was smart to schedule my tours now and attend orientation. As soon as I walked into this center, I knew it was the one so we signed her up that day! It's a nice relief having one more thing checked off the list!

I just know of a lady who lives nearby me who put her LO on a list when she was pregnant.  The LO didn't get called off the list until she was over 1 year old.

I also tried to get my DS in at this local church daycare/school in early October of this year that is really good and they told me it would be this upcoming summer at the earliest.  I found another place I liked just as well, though.

I don't think 1 or 2 years is the norm, but I think it does happen.

  • I don't think 14w is too early if you know where you want to go!  I will be 13w tomorrow and I just reserved my baby's spot at an in-home sitter that a few friends of mine have used/are using!  The price is more than right and I wanted to make sure I was able to secure a sitter that my close personal friends recommend!  I say go for it - if they think you are inquiring too early, they'll at least let you know when to follow up!

  • DH and I have already been looking, and even have a prospective caretaker already lined up. We're going to meet with her and discuss the nitty-gritties, but Lord-willing and the creeks don't rise, this will work out and we'll have that under our belts. :) So, no, I don't think it's at all too early for you to start looking. And as far as those places that look at you like you have 5 heads for inquiring so soon, maybe they don't have a sizable waiting list for a reason.

I feel like, it's never too early to be prepared. I'd rather get things done WAY too early and get looked at funny than to wait and be unsure I'll get the baby the kind of care I want for it. Go for it! And don't let the sideways glances deter you. It's your baby, you know what you need.
    :)>-
