Solids - Silly questions from FTM

I'm a first time mom and feeling like solids are doing great!  I also feel like I have a million questions.  So far my LO, who will be 8 months next week eats oatmeal, rice cereal, pumpkin, sweet potato, green beans, peas, apples, pears, prunes, bananas and avocado.   I am starting to feel like I don't know the next steps.  I keep introducing new foods, and will start proteins around 8 months (per my pediatrician).   I stick to the 3 to 4 day rule between foods but am feeling like maybe I should start to do chunkier foods?  Right now everything is either pureed or mashed with a fork.  Today puffs caught my eye, and all it says for age is "crawlers."  She has been crawling for several weeks now and also drinks from a sippy cup.  Any words of wisdom or advice??  TIA

  • With both our kids, we bought exactly 1 container of puffs ever, and used them as practice for picking up food. Once they got the hang of it, we just gave them pieces of what we were eating. There's also no reason to delay proteins (or anything but honey for that matter, unless you have allergies in your family).

  • DD is 6 months and I asked the pedi about giving finger foods. He said very small pieces of bread would be fine as long as we're watching her. I don't remember when I did finger food for DS - but he was eating solids much earlier than she is.

I did give her 1/2 of a yogurt melt and she hated it. The look on her face was awesome.

The only thing our pedi suggested we delay is eggs. We'll probably hold off on nuts as well until closer to a year.
  • I never followed the advice of waiting 3-4 days between foods. Depending on the food, I give her pea sized or french fry sized pieces that she can eat herself. I tried the puff and yogurt melts as well and my daughter just played with them. She wouldn't really eat them. I basically just use those for long trips as a snack. I have given my daughter eggs (scrambled and boiled), chicken, meatballs, toast, pasta etc. Usually whatever I am eating. I have steamed potatoes and veggies for her as well. My daughter just turned 9 months on Nov 8th and I am also a first time mom.
  • This website has helped me a lot: https://wholesomebabyfood.momtastic.com  I've basically been taking cues from my LO as to what she's ready for. It took her a while to accept any kind of solid foods. We started around 5 months and she wanted nothing to do with it. I kept trying on and off. When she turned 7 months, she suddenly became more interested and curious. We've been introducing new things little by little. First very smooth purees, then working our way through chunkier foods. She just recently started getting the hang of chewing once I introduced her to Mum mums. Before then, I would put pieces of food like banana in front of her, and she would just play with them. Now she's curious and wants to try everything, grabbing everything out of my hand. This morning she ate crumbled up pieces of egg yolk and pieces of cooked apple. This is a big step for us! But I do feel that once she realized how to feed herself and chew with the mum mum crackers, she understood what she needs to do.

  • My son is a piglet and will eat pretty much anything I offer him.  That being said, I don't give him any spiced/sauced/marinated foods, just plain, and only small chunks of things that are soft enough to chew easily.  I've given him all the major meats, including fish, but am waiting on shellfish.  I'm also going to wait on nuts.  And I've got an aversion to trying green beans, because I introduced them early, and he got horriffic gas.  Not anxious for a repeat.
