Pregnant after 35

Need for peri?

I'm 39 and pregnant w #2. My first is 16 months old, so I was AMA last time too. I started out last time going to the perinatologist bc I was terrified I would have a rough pregnancy bc I was so old. Well, I had the easiest pregnancy in the history of pregnancies (my OB said I was the most boring patient he'd ever had), so I got released from that early in my second trimester. This time around, I've been referred again, and I'm going to go for the first appointment, which always includes the cool 3D ultrasound. And I want to do the 20 week anatomy ultrasound, but I really REALLY don't want to go to them other than that. Honestly, more doc appts just make me nervous, and I'm trying to be very zen about this pregnancy. My OB was fine with my plan. But now I'm second-guessing myself. Anyone have any thoughts on it? My OB literally said he has to offer the peris to anyone over 35, but my pregnancy shouldn't be any different than a 25 yo considering my experience last time. Oh, also we did the Panorama test, so we already know genetically this baby is perfectly healthy.

Re: Need for peri?

  • I don't see any reason to go to anyone other than your OB/GYN, especially since you had good results from your panorama test. I'm 40 and other than starting 1st tri with an RE because he was already seeing me when I got my bfp, I've been with my OB/GYN through my entire pregnancy and have never felt like I wasn't in good hands. It sounds like you are healthy and have no reason to be concerned. I say don't drive yourself crazy with worries and doubts. Your OB can order testing if anything comes up he's concerned about.

  • Thanks, guys! I guess I just needed reassurance than it's okay to trust my instincts. And my instincts say the peris are an anxiety-inducing waste of time.
  • I'm kind of annoyed with my OB, lol.. Because of my "AMA" + high-risk history they continue to refer me back to a peri/MFM for my u/s and labs. Don't get me wrong, both offices are great, but it's a pain in the patootie to juggle both appointments in different parts of town, fighting Atlanta traffice, and trying to make sure I have childcare lined up for my 2 yr olds since I am a SAHM and no family nearby to drop them off on a whim. My peri has said I may actually have a very healthy normal pregnancy this go around so this back and forth is getting to be a pain.  Hopefully he's right!!

  • I am 38 and I only saw a peri for my NT scan and my 20 week anatomy scan.  Other than that, I have only been seen by my OB.

  • I just turned 39 and I've never been referred to one. Could just be that my practice group is qualified for AMA too. I've only had to see my OB. Oh, and I have high blood pressure which puts me in the high risk category! Strange.

  • What's crazy is my OB's practice is practically all AMA! It's why I chose him, lol! And he's fine with my plan. I'm the one being paranoid. I'm glad to hear not seeing a specialist is fairly common. And i do so love the high res ultrasounds. :) So I'll see them twice and let that be that.
