PAMPERS! My son was hospitalized

My SO always buys LO's diapers and the brands that we have always used is Huggies or LUVS. DS has never had a diaper rash or any issues with these brands. Last week, SO walked in with Pampers Overnight diapers and literally a day later, DS was screaming out in pain and reaching for his penis and started developing fevers. I brought him to the ER on base and they mis-diagnosed him, saying that he had a stomach bug and prescribed medication for him. Two days later and he wasn't getting better, he was getting progressively worse. He couldn't go to Daycare all week because he had fevers as high as 104 degrees. I brought him back to the ER and they took a urine sample. His urine was cloudy and had puss in it. The doctor informed me that he had a bladder infection that may ahve spread to his kidneys (hence the fevers), and that bacteria called Staph was growing in his urine. He was hospitalized for two nights and 3 days and after running a test on his diaper, realized that there is acid in the brand PAMPERS, that DS is allergic to. I wanted to share my story with everyone, feel free to ask any questions.

Very scary!  I wonder how pampers are different from other brands.
  • I'm sorry this happened to you, how scary! :-( My LO uses Pampers daily and so I did a little poking around on the internet regarding that issue and it seems like every brand has had issues of this kind here or there... the best summation I could find was on Snopes, for anyone else who uses the brand and is alarmed.

I hope your LO is feeling much better soon!

Oh wow, scary! Is he doing better? Did you contact Pampers? It may be that specific kind of Pampers, we use other kinds (Baby Dry and Swaddlers) and we have never had a problem. Also, Luvs is owned by Pampers so the diapers are very similar.
I think it's specifically the Pampers Overnight kind- at least that's what did it for him! He is much better and back to his old self thanks for asking. They had to give him antibiotics through an IV during his hospital stay, so he had a quick recovery.

He's back to his old, happy, energetic self! Thank you! I think it may be the Pampers Overnight version specifically.

  • Aww, poor little man! I hope he is doing better. You should post this on the Connect With Pampers board. They have representatives there who can hopefully help make this right.

  • OMG so scary. It's funny because when we stocked up before DD was born we bought Huggies & Pampers. But since we ran out of those we're all LUVS. There's some comfort in knowing you use one kind that you know works for your kid. (I know my DD can't use Huggies wipes, real real bad diaper rash like after one day!)

I'm really sorry to hear your son had to go through that.  That said, your child is an exception, just like anyone who is allergic to anything.  Peanuts aren't bad, they're just dangerous for people with allergies, kwim?
Exactly. So glad your son's OK. But we've used Pampers exclusively with both kids and never had any issues. Kids are just sensitive to different things.

  • Allergic reactions don't cause bacterial infections.  I'm sorry your son went through that, but I'm not convinced it was the diapers.

According to the specialist, the swelling of the pamper that holds in all of that urine in as he's sleeping overnight is what caused the infection. Not trying to convince you, just passing along what an actual doctor said.

Which is exactly why I said that there's acid in the diapers that DS is allergic to- I specifically said him, not every kid. Thanks.

That may be the case, but you also titled your post with the name of the brand highlighted followed by the fact that your son was hospitalized.  It comes across as fear mongering of the brand, not that it was an allergic reaction that your son unfortunately had.  Glad he's feeling better, though.  It's no fun to deal with a hurt/sick LO.

Exactly.  It's not "Pampers!" that caused the issue.  It's "Allergic reaction!" that did.  Whether you really meant to or not, you were implying it was this particular brand that's the problem and it's not.

Thank you, I am glad he's back to normal as well. It's been a rough weekend. I wanted to link what brand of diapers we happened to use that was related to the incident just in case this happened to happen to another mother. I also posted this on FB and there were 3 other moms that used this brand and could relate to it giving their LO's issues and were happy that I raised awareness, so I was trying to do the same on this board. I get your point though.

Sorry this happened to your LO. I hated Pampers and changed almost immediately because DS was allergic to them.

I just saw an article on FB that someone posted about a baby that got awful burns all over his thighs from a Huggie's diaper leaking whatever they are stuffed with and although it was very scary, I realize this could happen with any diaper I use but luckily the chances are pretty slim.

That's horrible!! I do realize this too- maybe we should've cloth diapered after all!

This story has been going around for awhile now. The brand and sex of the kid changes. Hoax.

Hmm, it was on the local Seattle news but could be. That's what I was thinking anyways. Something meant to scare parents.

I saw it, too. Whatever it was, it looked terrible. Poor kid.

  • DD had a bad reaction to Pampers Overnight it caused a very bad rash. We ended up in the ER and I returned the whole box of diapers.

  • My LO had a reaction to pampers overnight when he was a newborn. We haven't used pampers since then. Hope your LO gets better soon.
  • What a horrible thing to go through as parents, and also for your LO! It's crazy to think that someone can be that sensitive to a diaper, but I do know that they contain a lot of chemicals. My son has never had an issue with the Pampers overnights, but I am considering just using Luvs (his daytime diaper) overnight now since he's getting older and waking up more dry...the overnight absorbency is not really needed anymore. Hope he is recovering quickly...poor little guy!

  • We never used overnight diapers, but I am sure they probably have stronger chemicals. DD does great with regular Pampers and Sam's Club's diapers.
I hope your LO is recovering fast!

He's back to normal now, thanks! We won't be using any overnight diapers from now on, we'll continue to use the regular ones as well.

  • We just started using overnight diapers (I think a different brand) and some of the gel got onto LOs skin and made him blister.  This only happens when they are full (the gel escaping), but that's kind of why I need the overnight diapers.  He was peeing the bed every night and waking up.

Not sure what I am going to do in the future.  I've used cloth diapers (his first year) and those just aren't absorbent enough now that he's 15 months and drinking more.
