Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Nasal Congestion

Yes, it's that time of year.  We live in the South, and LO already has a terribly stuffy nose.  He sneezes a fair amount, and rarely coughs.  It's not in his chest as of now.  Pretty sure he has post nasal drip going on...  We are sleeping with a humidifier (cool mist), baby vapor rub at night, and saline nose drops twice a day.

Anyone else have something to try?  What do you guys do for your LO's stuffy nose at 3 months?  Jake is 3 months as of this week.

Re: Nasal Congestion

  • My LO is 6 weeks and we are in Texas so we face the same issue.  The erratic weather does nothing to help!  I swear by the saline drops and aspirator when needed.  We don't have a humidifier but I do sit with him in a steamy bathroom on days it is bad (which is not often luckily)!  Not sure what else you could be doing other than what you are.

  • Thanks! Yeah, 38 one day and 77 the next does wonders for allergies!  I'm just trying to see if there is something else to try....
  • The child care nurse that did LOs checkup today told me to squirt breast milk in bubs nose to clear up nasal congestion, it thins it and makes them sneeze it out. Haven't tried it yet though.
  • I had heard this.
  • I can't explain why, but after using saline drops, the nose frida, and a humidifier I finally tried a home remedy from my aunt and tried putting a little bit of olive oil on (not IN) her nose and sinus cavities. For whatever reason, this seems to really help at night.

  • So glad to see this post my LO has had the same issues for the past two weeks! Dr wasn't concerned with the way our weather has been. I've been doing the drops and bulb and have had no luck. Have had a humidifier in his room since he's come home. I will try the steam bathroom and the olive oil.

Has anyone seen the Vicks night lights or tried them???
  • I used the vicks night lights with my first.  They worked ok.  I like the salve or the mist to drop in the humidifier better.  I'm definitely going to try the olive oil!!  thanks.
  • Little Remedies makes a decongestant drop. I used them with DS1. I think you can start at three months, but check the bottle. It's not the saline drops, it's decongestant. You can only use them for like three days or something. They work miracles, though!

  • Ok maybe I will try the drops for the humidifier instead I've heard a lot of people talk good about those. My LO is only 9 wks Friday so have a few more weeks before I can use anything other then that and the saline drops.
  • Same thing you're doing. My daughter had a head cold when she was a month and that's all we did.

  • My LO is ebf and I actually noticed a huge improvement after cutting out dairy from my diet.

I would cut out dairy, but that's been done.  My LO has a milk protein allergy.  Yea!  We are on Neocate after many different tries of various things......and a trip to a GI Specialist.
    Thanks for everyone's replies!!!
