Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Colic

I had a less than easy pregnancy.  Since the birth of my baby, 8 weeks ago, life hasn't gotten any easier.  We have survived some pretty hard stuff in these first few weeks of life, but surprisingly, colic has been one of the most difficult.  The pediatrician gave me that "oh you poor soul" look as he told me our baby had colic.  I could really use some encouraging right now, any moms out there that have survived colic before, please reassure me that there is a light at the end of the tunnel.  How long did the colic last?  What made it better (besides the 5 S's)? Any any suggestions would be greatly welcomed.

Re: Colic

  • I feel your pain..... My son had it and it was worse in the mid afternoon and then late at night. For the day time colic I have to say the moby was the best investment!!! At night tho my husband and I rotated taking care if him and holding him. It took a few weeks but luckily it has gotten better. If you can try to get help by either family or friends during the day so you can rest.

  • Family or friends!! Don't be afraid to ask for help. My DD didn't sleep a wink for the first 2 weeks at night and if it weren't for my mother coming overnight once a week I don't know if I would have made it.
  • I just read an article about how colicky babies are more likely to be better problem solvers as  children. So look on the bright side, you might have some trouble on your hands now but your LO might be top of the class later!
  • Google colic support group. Great website! My LO was very colicky from 2 weeks to about 16 weeks. He is 17 weeks now and we still have our bad days. Hang in there!
  • My 1 month old daughter just started showing symptoms of colic within the last week. If you need someone else to talk to please let me know. I feel like a horrible mother for not really being able to help my poor baby.
  • I don't have a colicky baby but I was one.  My family still talks about how one day my grandmother just cried along with me.  I don't have much advice but to accept all the help that comes your way.  Let your neighbour push the stroller around the block while you take a shower. Let family hold the baby while you feed yourself.  Go easy on yourself.  It will pass!  It was found out several years later that I have a dairy allergy so that is one thing you could try to eliminate.
  • My first had colic and reflux.  It was awful so I feel for you.  Like someone else said, the Moby was a lifesaver during the day.  I also pushed her pediatrician about reflux.  Once she was put on Zantac, things got a little better.  It was the worst at night (although the days were pretty rough too).  Car rides were the only thing that helped.  I know it may not seem like it, but it will get better.  She is almost 2 now and is an excellent sleeper.  Good luck!

My pedi never used the word colic but DD1 was more miserable than not until she was 4-6 months old.

    She liked showering with me.

Putting in the wrap- in a tight hold- and swaying and shushing loudly helped, too.

  • DD had colic until four months. It is so hard when you're in the middle of it but it really does fly by and then you'll laugh about it later, I promise!!

Some things that helped us were:

    1. Holding DD and lightly bouncing up and down in front of the stove vent fan - note that this only works if you have a really loud fan. We tried to do this at a friend's house but it wasn't loud enough.
    2. Our pedi prescribed what she called gas drops on steroids and it made a HUGE difference. They were Levsin drops.
    3. I cut out dairy and switched to Alimentum as I BF her but gave 1 bottle of formula a day.

  • It DOES get better!!  My LO is almost 8 months.  Colic, reflux, recessed chin so struggled nursing, etc.   Now she is a happy, playful crawling machine!!   This board really helped me so I'm here to pay it forward :)  THERE IS LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL!  She turned a leaf around 2 1/2 months.
  • Hang in there!  My DD (now almost 5 and absolutely AWESOME) screamed for 3 months and 10 days.  And then like a light switch there were solutions to the problems. (fresh diaper/hungry) It was so much relief to know that I could finally fix it.

It's okay to set that screaming baby down (dry and fed of course) and go outside for 5 minutes and gather  yourself.  They are going to scream anyway, it is perfectly fine to let them lay in their crib and do it for 5 minutes while you go gather your sanity.  Honestly there were times when I felt like throwing something - so I would set the baby down and just go to a quiet place for a few minutes.  I promise there is light at the end of the tunnel.  And yes, bless  your heart!
