What was/will be your baby's first veg/fruit?

Curious to know what everyone started or is planning to start LOs on? I know its supposed to be veggies first so was thinking avocados or something green like broccoli.

  • She had a had little taste of avocado. And yesterday she sucked a pickle. She wasn't impressed with either. She is 6 months on Thanksgiving so we will be doing sweet potatoes

  • Squash. He liked it best mixed with oatmeal but ate some plain too. We just started on Saturday.

  • Carrots most likely. We always have them on hand!
  • Sweet potatoes!

  • My doc told me to start with orange veggies as they have more sweet and less overpowering flavor. DS1 was squash which he hated. Baked or steamed he still wouldn't eat it. I think we will start with sweet potatoes for DS2. Probably chunked and steamed.

We have months before we have to worry about it though.
  • Bananas most likely or sweet potatoe, starting after Dec 1st some time!

  • Probably avocado
  • Oatmeal. That was ds1's first food and he still eats oatmeal every single day. Then I'll go to homemade sweet potatoes.

  • This little guy got apple sauce first because I had a shit ton from apple picking.  He's since had sweet potato, banana, peas, green beans and prunes.  I think the peas may give him a little bit of an upset stomach because he was unusually cranky both nights after having them.

  • Avocado then bananas
  • We did green beans first but he didn't like it. He loves sweet potato, squash, pears, and carrots.
  • We tried a little oatmeal, and he wasn't impressed. We then tried banana, and he loved it. When I say "try," though, I mean he ate maybe half a teaspoon in total.

  • We did banana first, then avocado, and he recently had unsweetened apple sauce.

  • I caught DD stealing a taste of my apple so that's the first thing I puréed for her. Her favorite however is roasted butternut squash

  • For those saying squash, what type did you use? Butternut? Acorn?

I told DH I wanted to give LO sweet potatoes at thanksgiving. We've been doing oatmeal for two weeks now.

  • For those using oatmeal, what kind?? Thank you!

We are doing sweet potato at thanksgiving as well! The whole fam damily is so concerned about when I'm "finally" going to give him solids so I figured we could all watch and see how he may or may not be ready.
  • Thank you for answering! @kdc2007
  • His first was carrots, loved 'em...he's since had sweet potatoes, squash, & green beans. He was not a fan of baby food squash, he would eat a couple bites then turn and stare at the side of his highchair LOL we might try squash again when I start making baby food.

  • We will also be trying sweet potato on Thanksgiving.  She hasn't actually eaten any solids, but we use peeled apples as a cold teether for her (she can't bite any of it off yet and it works so much better than any other type of teether.)

This is my thinking as well! I don't think he's ready but it will be "for show"

  • I cant believe how many and how well all the June eaters are doing!!
For some reason starting solids scares me a bit-I really don't know why, maybe just the thought that LO is growing up:(

How did you all decide when it was time to start? Did Dr. say something, was LO BF/FF all the time, or were they just old enough?
  • We did sweet potatoes!

    Us too.
  • @cricket81 ... We started with butternut squash, and it remains his favorite so far. He gets so excited when he eats it, yet shudders at apples.

We lost our first (EDD 07/23/12) after finding out at 12 weeks there was no longer a heartbeat. Our rainbow was born 05/22/13 and was worth all we went through.

  • We are going with avocado or sweet potato. Either way, those will be 2 of her firsts.

  • We started with oatmeal with banana, then carrots, sweet peas. He's eaten a little banana off my finger. But squash is next. All organic.

I'm waiting until LO starts grabbing at the food we are eating. She watches us now, but hasn't tried to swipe it yet!
  • @cynthia2007
I think avocado is a good place to start but not broccoli. Stick to your Stage One foods, squash, carrots, sweet potatoes, avocado, bananas, pears,... There a list that my pedi gave me.

  • We did squash, but I just bought the Gerber puree. (*Puts on flame suit.*) He loved it! I think we'll try sweet potatoes next, to stay in the orange - colored family.

Then I want to do avocado. Real, just mashed up avocado.
    @stargazer763

I bought the Gerber Naturals. The ingredients listed are squash and water. That seems safe to me. Ideally I would love to shop at the Farmer's Market and make my own, but the reality is that I work full time, and I just don't have the time right now. I will probably give it a whirl over the holidays, but for now, it is Gerber.

I read that peas are high in fiber and may cause constipation, I wonder if that's what made the little guy upset?

Peas always made ds1 loose. He enjoys eating them now at 2 1/2 years and he's very regular. I don't think they cause constipation.

Owen is grabbing out food already. He grabbed a cucumber slice off MH salad the other day at lunch. He sucked on it, and cried when MH took it away. It might be time to start, but I'm gonna try and hold off longer.
