Paint and being in the house

So DH and I had our entire house painted this past week except for our bedroom. I was a good girl and slept at my parents up until today.

Paint has been dry for over 24 hours but there is a residual smell of paint. However, I honestly think this smell will last for quite some time.

My question is basically that I'm sooooo ready to sleep in my own bed with DH and our bedroom is the one room that hasn't had a paint job. Do you ladies think its ok tonight? Especially if we keep bedroom door closed and fan on and windows open??

Thanks gals!

Re: Paint and being in the house

  • I can't imagine it would be an issue. I'm in the middle of painting my bedroom and I've been sleeping in it.

  • I read read somewhere that as long as your past fiest trimester, its okay.
  • Unless the paint was like lead paint or something and you drank it, you would have been fine sleeping in the room the night you painted it.

  • You are fine. All interior paint is latex these days and VOC compliant. This means you are fine to do the painting even.

  • My ILs and DH painted the nursery yesterday. We kept it well ventilated, and today the paint smell is totally gone. I've been in the house all day, and in my craft room next to the nursery and I've been totally fine.

I don't think you have anything to worry about!

  • My friend said she helped stain her parents floors while she was pregnant with her son. Although, I probably wouldn't be bold enough to do that.. I think you should be okay. Also, my mom always told me that if you put in a little bit of vanilla extract into the paint, it will help cut back on how strong the smell is. I have no clue if it is true or not.

ETA: Just googled it and it is confirmed about the vanilla, lol.

  • You should be good.  I painted DS's room and the Nursery by myself 2 weeks ago.  Can you open the windows for a bit if the smell bothers you?

Haha, that is so weird! It begs the question . . . who in the world decided to put vanilla extract in their paint in the first place?!

  • My doctor told me its fine for me to paint, unfortunately!
  • The vanilla in the paint trick totally works!  I use a tablespoon per gallon, it doesn't effect the color and seriously cuts back on the paint smell.
