Cloth Diapering

What detergent is popular nowadays?

It seems like a lot of you are making your own CD detergent, but aside from that is there a particular brand beloved by this board? When I was CDing my son, I remember there was an Etsy seller who was pretty popular around these parts, but that was a few years ago.

  • I think most of use use one of these brands:

    Charlie's
    Soap Nuts
    Nellie's
    Tide Powdered
    Tiny Bubbles

  • I use Country Save. I love it because it's inexpensive to order in bulk on amazon, and it works for the diapers and all of our clothes. No need for separate detergents for everyone.
  • I was using Tide or All (both free and clear), but then was edged into trying Allen's and after a while I didn't like it. I now have a product from a company in Boulder Colorado. It's sold at Costco, it's citrus scented and biodegradable. I use it for both diapers and regular clothes. I don't want to buy one detergent for one thing and another for the rest.

Whats the detergent from Boulder called? I live about 30 min from Boulder and am searching for a new detergent as I am not happy with what I have used so far.
  • I started out with Tide until they changed their formula so I tried Charlie's Soap.  I had pee stink for the first time using that so I tried EcoSprouts.  Soaking the diapers in that got rid of most of the pee stink but since it doesn't suds up at all, I couldn't tell if I was using too much, not enough, or the right amount of detergent and I just felt like things weren't getting very clean. Since people were not reporting issues with the new Tide, I decided to go back to Tide.

  • I'm using planet because it scored best between cd safe options and on the EWG website for health.

  • Is there a reason to use Tide powder instead of the liquid for CD? I have a front loading HE machine and have always used liquid detergent. Baby doesn't arrive til Feb but going to get all of this straight beforehand!
  • @Lyndsaydale - From what I remember when I was researching detergents, liquids usually have additives that keep them from unmixing (like when salad dressing settles and you need to shake it). These are not good for CD's. There is a great detergent guide at Pinstripes and Polkadots. https://www.pinstripesandpolkadots.com/detergentchoices.htm

@CurlieWhirlie - DS was sensitive to Charlie's and Tide. Rockin' Green was okay for a while, but it wasn't great. I finally tried Tiny Bubbles and really like it. I can get a box that holds 60 loads for about the same price as a box of Tide that would do 90 loads, but it beats having DS break out in a rash. I also hear that Costco has sales on it sometimes, so we may get a membership and check that out.

  • For any Canadians curious about what's a good one to buy up here, I use NatureClean and it works great!  We've used it for years since DH has very sensitive skin, and continued using it when DD was born for our CDs.  Also, if I ever want to splurge, or if it goes on sale, I'll likely buy some LaundryTarts.
  • I used all free and clear and felt like it wasn't rinsing well at all. Now I use Charlie's.

  • I am using Nellie's and Ecover Zero.  I have had samples of Country Save and I like that a lot too, but it is hard to find around here and I don't want to order from Amazon because I don't need $81 worth of laundry detergent at one time!!
