Green Mucus baby poop, help!

DD2 caught a stomach bug last week or at least that is what the doctor thinks. She started going way more often and it turned green and mucuosy. It now goes between yellowshe is ebf and green and varying degrees of mucuosy. Dr is not worried and said even if it stays this way, she is not worried. Anyone else been told this is "normal" or not concerning?? I always hear these symptoms related to problems like an allergy, oversupply, etc. I am having a hard time accepting that mucus poops can be no cause for concern. On the other hand, LO is not bothered or acting uncomfortable, etc. What says the bump?

Re: Green Mucus baby poop, help!

  • DS had green mucousy poop as well. His Dr wasn't concerned about that, she was when he had blood show up in his poop. DS does have an allergy to milk protein so I don't know if that was the cause. It has gone back to normal once I cut out all dairy, but the Dr didn't suspect an allergy until the blood was there.

  • DD also alternates b/w the normal yellow mustard seed poop and mucousy green poop. We are actually taking her to a gastroenterologist today to see what the deal is. Like PP, DD has blood in her stools along with the mucus. I am guessing it's a milk protein allergy and/or GER....

  • Omg, I have the same thing going on green mucousy poop no blood. We go to the dr tomorrow so I will let u know what she says. However, I have been doing some reading. Sometimes it's more green than others and I notice this after she's been a little impatient at the breast sometimes she doesn't want to work for the fatty hind milk no matter how hard I try. The mucous is new though, and so is her drooling. She has been drooling like crazy so much that I wonder if she's beginning to teeth. She is only 2 months but I know babies can teeth for a good month before any poke through. And I also know some babies get their teeth as early as 3 months! Anyway, if Babis drool a lot they swallow some, and it causes poops to be mucousy. I'm going to talk to my dr tomorrow, but thought I'd tell u what I'm finding to help ease your mind for now.

  • Just FYI you might want to have your pedi test for blood...there can be blood present even if it's not visible. I've brought in diapers many times where I couldn't see blood and it tested positive...just FYI. And that often indicates milk protein allergy.

  • Thanks! I wouldn't have thought of that!!

  • Dr looked at her poopy diaper and said it looked fine. She said yellow, green, and in between is all normal as it can very everyday depending on what u eat. Unless if course baby is acting sick, fever, fussy, etc. The mucous is probably from the extra drool. So all is good!

Good to hear! DD2 is super happy and thriving and has no other symptoms of any of the things that could cause green poop, such as an allergy. So I think I just need to wrap my head around the logic that without other symptoms and the doctor not being concerned, I need to just keep and eye out but worry a bit less!

  • My son is having some problems like that. At first they said it was normal and that it will go away. well he is 12 weeks now and i am calling the Dr. in the morning cause for the past week his poop has been green, hard, mucus, and bloody. I have already changed his formula my self to a lactose sensitivity. At first it seemed to work but then nope right back to the same thing. I hope the doc doesn't tell me that lets just wait, i think i will snap. This poor little guy has not been sleeping like he used to and always crying and it sounds like he is in pain. So the way i feel about it if you don't believe what the doc says about your kids. Tell them that you are going to get a second opinion i have done with with my older kids.
  • DS had a stomach bug last month and had mucous in his stool also. Our pedi was not concerned and said it was because of the stomach bug. I would say it was on and off for about a week, but after that he hasn't had mucous since. I would just watch it and if it continues maybe talk to your doc again.
