Finding time to get out of the house

This sounds silly, but I feel like with DS' routine, it is hard to find enough time to get out of the house. Now that he is on solids, it takes forever to get him ready to leave. He wakes up, nurses, gets a diaper change.... Eats. By the time this is all done, an hour has passed and I have maybe an hour or two to run whatever chore it is I wanted to accomplish. It's like a marathon just to leave the house. So I was wondering if I am just being a weird mama for not just pushing him through whatever it is I need to get done, or if this is normal? Now that he is eating more frequently, I would just feel bad making him skip a meal and I feel like eating on the go is not as substantial. Thoughts? Any tricks on how to get around this? Also, his nap schedule maybe hindering this as well. He used to nap so poorly, now he is almost napping on a set schedule he set himself. Usually 11-12:30 is his first nap, the second is 3-4:30.

Re: Finding time to get out of the house

  • Can you feed him a solid meal while your out and about? I know you said it's not as much, but once and a while won't be a big deal. They're still getting most of their nutrition from formula/BM any way. I FF, but if you pump you can bring a pumped bottle. I don't know...this is why I'm glad I bottle feed and am okay with pouch food! :P

  • Agree with DRea. Ok days I need to get things done I bring a squeezer ( usually earths best or plum organics bf the recall!!!) as well as some berries or a cheese stick and then he feeds himself in the stroller . It keeps him entertained and I get things done . It's not every day but for me personally it doesn't bother me. Also ds is a good napper but not consistent given that he's in day care part time . I make sure he sleeps enough during the day but sometimes his first nap is at 830 and others closer to 10 ( also he wakes up btwn 545 and 7 so lots depends on that ). I'm not strict with it
And I find that's helped him become even better napping with noise around etc
  • Leaving the house is a chore in itself for me, because I live 45 minutes from any sort of grocery store, Walmart, and outlet mall. So I time
leaving with his morning nap and he will sleep in the car. I bf him in the parking lot and I usually bring snacks and don't worry about a "meal".
  • I used to feel like that with my first two, because our lives revolved around the baby's nap schedule.  I felt like we could never leave.  But now that the older kids have places we have to go during the day, the baby's routine moves down the list of priorities.  The baby has to nap on the go, in the car, in a carrier at the store, or wait until later.

To be honest, my baby is so content in the carrier that she doesn't fuss for milk or anything as long as she is there.  There are days where she may be an hour late for a feeding or something but she would never let you know because she's content in the carrier looking around at the store or whatever.

I think my last two babies have suffered a little because of this - they have never been on a predictable schedule.  They have to go with the flow and sleep and eat when they can.  But maybe that's a good thing too.  Who knows?!

  • We have set activities from 10-11 a couple days/week.  She usually naps around 10:30 on other days, so she often takes a short one in the car on the way there and sleeps after.  DH and I have never had super consistent meal times, so we just make sure we eat sometime, and I bring bottles and mum mums in case she's hungry when we're out.  We also go out in the afternoon--same rules.  I find that if I don't prioritize going out, I don't.  However, our day is better if we leave at least once because it really breaks up the day and DD loves it.  I know schedules are supposed to be important, but I feel like DD can handle it.  We are still super strict with her bedtime.
  • Even though we have a fairly set schedule (that DS came up), I manage to get out and do things by doing the following:
    1) Have everything packed and ready to go so that when he wakes up from a nap, I change him and we're out the door.
    2) Leave early so that he'll fall asleep in the car, park at the destination and read til he wakes up. (eg. he has swim class at 3pm one day, and normally he naps around 2, so I leave the house around 2 and once he's asleep I park at the pool and read til he wakes up or it's time to go to class)
    3) We also don't worry to much about meals on the go.
    4) Nursing in the Ergo! The other day, we were at a birthday party, and DS started to get hungry/sleepy, so I stuck him in the Ergo, got him latched on, pulled the shade over his head, and kept on chatting/eating/partying. :)
  • @DC2London thanks for settling me down about it. I guess I have just become really bogged down by making sure he eats eats eats and it's really been making logistics a bit sticky. Your statement on not being as regimented about it at this age does make sense. I usually do pack snacks to go if we are out about the house, but with BLW, I find the messiness really makes me take a step back about doing it in public. I would rather let him get dirty in his high chair at home. But if I need to really get out of the house, I guess lunch would be an okay time to pack a snack instead and get moving! I appreciate your help on this ladies.

  • As a SAHM now, I'm getting stir crazy staying home all the time. :)  I like to get out and about.  Today I spent the morning running around trying to figure out who needs what paperwork to change my name and we counted that as a field trip.  Because DD got to see the courthouse, the bank, the insurance company... we called it our Kalamazoo Tour.

We aren't up to feeding regular meals yet.  We give E solids when he seems hungry and I'm empty (still mostly EBFing).  We actually just gave Cheerios for the first time today! Which he loved, BTW.  I'm looking forward to giving him more finger foods and little things when we get out.  I'm ready for him to wean. *sigh*
