Babies: 3 - 6 Months

blood in baby poop

I'm a FTM and my baby girl is almost 4 moths old. She usually poops once in two or three days. Today she already pooped 5 times! She also is more fussy than usual, it seems like her stomach hurts but I'm not sure. In her last poop I noticed some streaks of light red blood. I think I'll call the doctor tomorrow, but I would appreciate any advice. What could it be and what should I do in the meantime? Or maybe I should go to urgent care? Anyone had something similar?

Re: blood in baby poop

  • I've heard allergies can do this. Bf or ff feeding? If bf did you change anything in your diet? Maybe a milk allergy? Change of formula?

I agree with you about calling the doctor to just be safe. And hope your LO is feeling better soon!

  • At two months old I started seeing blood in DS's poop.  Turned out he had an intolerance to dairy and soy.  Because I am BFing I had to totally eliminate those two things from my diet.

If that is indeed what it is, the good news is almost all kids grow out of it.  DS grew out of it around 9 months.
  • My son had a difficult poop once and had blood in there, it was a one time thing. Doc said no problem. Keep an eye out, even take a photo and report to paediatrician what you're noticing.

  • I forgot to mention that I'm bf. I use formula only if my LO is staying at grandma's (once a week). I don't think I changed anything in my diet. The problem is not only blood, but she also seems to have diarrhea, her poops are really explosive today, very little stays in the diaper and most just ends up on her back. I heard it's uncommon for bf baby to have diarrhea so I don't know what it can be.
I'll call my pedi in the morning to make sure it's nothing more serious.
    Thanks for all your help!

  • This sounds like an allergy.  The blood could be from an anal fissure too.  Take pictures and monitor every poop diaper.  Keep in constant touch with your Pedi.  My LO has a milk protein allergy.  He did this same thing too.
  • Yep, allergy. My lo had blood and mucus and she has a milk protein allergy and soy. She is now on alimentum and fine!
