Breastfeeding

after Bf-ing your first LO...

...what would you/did you do differently for the second time?

I would invest in an electric pump. I was crazy and poor enough to manually pump this time, but heck no, never again. Manual pumping with dicurvain's tendonitis is extra sucky!

I would also get more of a stockpile frozen supply before going back to work.

  • I'm still nursing, but next time around I really need to be more serious about my water intake.  I can definitely tell when I'm dehydrated and it makes me dip into my freezer stash...

  • This is my third baby but first time sticking with BFing. I wish I would've done more research prior to giving up with my other two. Looking back now I realize that I could've been successful if I had educated myself.

If we have another baby, I don't know what I would do differently with BFing. But I would definitely start making freezer meals at 7mos of pregnancy. When BFing it's so hard to find the time and free arms to prepare any food for yourself or other kids. And I would keep snacks in the bedroom for during the night.

  • More research before baby was born. Purchase better sleep bras and more nursing tanks. Start using a wetbag instead of a Ziploc for pump parts at work much sooner. Accept help from family and friends whenever it's offered.

  • I just had my second, but one thing I changed was pumping early on. I've only pumped a handful of times this go 'round and it's amazing the difference in my happiness and stress level with nursing, the baby and feeling housebound. It's night and day.

  • I did everything differently and it's been great! DS had reflux and to be honest I just panicked. He was difficult to nurse because he popped off and cried a lot. I felt awkward nursing in front of just about anyone and hated how we ended up sweaty and milk covered half the time. I got overwhelmed and exhausted and ended up pumping and supplementing with formula.

DD is also not easy to nurse at times because of reflux but now I stay calm, clean up the milk she drips everywhere with a burp rag and just keep going! I feel much more calm and confident with breastfeeding this time.

  • I'm probably one of the lucky few who had relatively few problems BF the first go round.  DS is 7 1/2 months now and we've never had to supplement.  We had a rocky start the first week because he lost more than 10% and I started off using a shield because of flat nipples so that delayed my milk coming in... but after we got going we were golden.  I was also fortunate enough to be able to stay home until he was 4 1/2 months so I got to build about a 500 oz freezer stash before going back to work (now down to more like 400).  I feel incredibly blessed that it has gone so well for us.

I credit this completely to "overeducating" myself - I took breastfeeding classes before he was born, and to groups like this one and my local support group.

  • I am not supplementing this time round and realizing I will always produce enough milk and when growth spurt happens its not lack of milk
