Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Please help!

I am at a lost. My baby is three weeks old ( I also have a 2.5 yr old). I am strictly breastfeeding. I have been having a horrible week because she cries unless she is being held. She hates her glider, bassinet, and bouncy seat. She has a very hard time going to sleep. She cries when she's tired, which is all the time. She was up from 2pm to almost 7 pm. She fights sleep so hard it's unbelievable. She maybe sleeps a couple hours a day. I thought newborns were supposed to sleep all day?! So, between my 2.5 yr old and a fussy newborn, I have been crying all week. I'm also a SAHM. I don't understand what I'm doing wrong or what I should do for her. Can newborns be spoiled? I didn't think that was possible until they were older. Any ideas? Can anybody relate? Any encouraging words? TIA

  • It will pass. It sounds like a wonder week. Just take it one hour at a time.

    You can do this!

  • Sounds like the 3 week growth spurt. This is exactly how our house has been the past 3 days. We have finally reached the end of it. (Hopefully)

  • Gas drops or gripe water? What are you eating? Chocolate, citrus, onions? All of those can mess with her tummy. Are you burping really well? Is she eating on one side long enough to get the hind milk that is more filling & full of fat to help her sleep better? Have you tried a swing? What about a carrier or moby wrap?

Sorry, lots of questions, but lots to think about.

  • Her behavior sounds completely normal. I have a 7 week old and just this week he will sit in the swing for about 10 minutes. He has to be held all the time. I understand your pain, I have a 20 month old. During the day, I will sit in my recliner with pillows propped around me and let baby sleep on my chest and I will sleep too. Can you look at sending your 2.5 year old to part-time daycare or to someone's house for a play date to give you a break during the week?
  • My little guy hit his growth spurt at that time. But it is really important that they get good sleep. I'm not a fan of always having them sleep on you. That's not restful sleep for either one of you. I'm a fan of the baby whisperer, she recommends 4 s's. setting the stage, swAddle, sit, shhhh pat. The shhh pat really helps my LO settle down.

Great response! My LO falls falls asleep in our ergo carrier despite how worked up she is, every single time. Works like a charm.

  • 3 weeks is a rough time. That's when DS was the fussiest. 5s's really work. The vacuum and my hair dryer worked like a charm to get him to calm down.

  • Your emotions/hormones are still trying to balance. I cried for a month. With that said, I am another vote for wearing your LO. At that age, my LO still liked his Moby. Try cutting out irritable foods and maybe that will help. My LO has terrible reflux and I still can barely put him down. He's 11 weeks on tues.
    Good luck mama!
  • BREATHE!

You're doing the best you can.  What's worked well for me with DD when she fights her naps are to nurse (if you're BF) in a dark room.  If that doesn't work, try skin to skin...wrap a blanket around the 2 of you with her on your chest.  Works like a charm.

  • Is it possible that your LO has a tummy ache, maybe colic? It could also just be the 3week growth spurt.
