FYI returning things at Target

I finally got around to returning my duplicates at target. I had receipts for everything except the ergo carrier. The guy at customer service told me that because it was above $70, and didn't have a receipt I could only exchange it for something else worth as much money, and WOULDNT be giving me a gift card. He told me the ergo was $90, so I had to spend that much in the same department. Um, first of all, no, the ergo is not $90, it's $115. Second of all, what is the difference if I spend the money now instead of later when I actually need something? -where else would I use a target gift card? Long story short, my husband and I had to go find the ergo in the store, argue with him that they sell it for $115 not $90, exchange ours for the one in the store, just to get a receipt that so we can exchange for something later on. Does any of this make sense? Didn't to me either. Just beware, if you are trying to return something without the receipt, check how much they charge for it bc it is likely that they will try to give you a lower amount.

Re: FYI returning things at Target

  • I believed I learned from the ladies on here about how horrible Target's return policy is.  They have an annual limit of how much you can return as well!

  • Did they have you print off your registry log? I had this same problem and the log will allow you to return up to $125 in gifts without receipts.

  • Could they look it up and see that this item was purchased from your registry?

  • There's also a limit to how much you return without a receipt! Their policy sucks! They take your drivers license number and once you return $100 without a receipt they won't take anymore back!
  • I had pretty much nothing but trouble from Target when we tried to return items from our wedding registry.
I registered for a few small baby items there, but didn't go all out because of the PITA experience a few years ago.
  • @eggerkr: OMG my head is going to explode!! Would it have been that easy?! Jeeeeeezzzzzz! I need to go back tomorrow and argue AGAIN, and try to straighten this out. Thanks for the heads up, I feel like an idiot.
  • @emjacks0n- Yeah, you sign into your account and print the log. My return experience was a nightmare too. Tons of the gift receipts I had were stating the item was already returned. Clearly it wasn't returned or I wouldn't be standing here trying to return it!!! I also think it might be more than $125 that you can return on the log too because I returned a $70.00 bouncy seat and $125.00 crib mattress with the log and had no problems. Also pay attention to what gets returned. The ladies got things mixed up and had taken 4 items I didn't get return receipts for. Her excuse was "oops we must have missed those." I also returned 15 items at once. Count your items and check the receipt!

  • Still double check that it works correctly if you use the gift return log.  I just returned a duplicate rock'n'play and they tried to give me only $40 for it even though it was on the purchase log.

I personally have had a worse time with BRU, they wouldn't let me exchange a duplicate outfit (same size and pattern) for a different pattern without a receipt... but the lady said "if you were just getting a different size or color I would let you do it" apparently since it was a different size and color it was a problem?  Then she offered to let me exchange it if I made up the difference of $9... for something that was on sale for $10, wtf.  Trying a different BRU this week.
  • Wow, we had almost the complete opposite experience at Target with returning items. We had to print off our registry but I went one day and got a gift card for 250 dollars and then we returned a few very large items a week later and got another gift card for 350 dollars. They were incredibly helpful so I don't know if we just got lucky or what. Sorry that you have had such a hard time returning your items, that really does suck.

This is how I returned stuff to Target from my baby and bridal registry. I printed my registry and they returned it from there. Was the item on sale recently? A lot of stores will do the lowest sales price from the last 30 days without a receipt, because it could have been bought on sale or with a coupon.

That's why I asked. Unless they can prove it was bought at reg price, I can see why they would probably not give full price credit.

  • Ugh yes I remember our wedding registry at target was a pain in the booty to exchange things. Dont understand such a big corp. Makes it so diffcult to exchange things
  • Thanks everyone! I didn't explain it very well, but he did end up giving us the full purchase price; but we had to exchange it for the same thing just to be able to have a receipt to exchange it again later.... So stupid! I'm going to try printing the registry tomorrow and going back to get a gift card instead. The hassle is beyond annoying.

I believe it was target that doesn't track who buys you what so when they neglected to put a 'from' note in the box with our $200 mixer from our wedding registry I had no way to find out who to thank. Nbr but I was pretty peeved.

  • Buy Buy Baby was awesome with returns. Pretty much they will take anything if it is on your registry. I got crib bumpers that did not fit my crib at my baby shower and I did not have a receipt for them and returned them to BBB. Turns out they were actually from Amazon!

  • They give you the lowest price the item was ever sold at.... It is so stupid!
  • That sucks! I've had no issues returning anything to Target including things NOT on my registry without receipts. I have gotten gift cards for everything. What a bummer!
