19 week Anatomy scan - Large head and short femur? Soft marker for Down's

We just had our 19 week anatmony scan and everything measured about on time or a little ahead except the femur. Dr. said the head was around 92% but the femur was only around 52%. They measure BPD to FL ratio?  He said it could be a soft marker for Down's ..wasn't extremely worried but sent us to a genetics specialists. I took the Materni21 test and waiting for results..:( Both my husband and I are tall. My Quad screen originally came back at 1:2100 but now goes down a bit due to the 1 soft marker. I am 41.

Has anyone else had anything similiar? very worried

  • I haven't but a friend of mine had the soft markers of spots on the heart and something else I can't remember and her quad screening came back 1:21.  Her son is a happy, healthy almost 3 year old.  Back then they didn't have the fetal DNA blood test so she just had to wait it out.  I wouldn't worry just yet.  The Materni21 test should give you more information and hopefully more peace of mind.  Good luck I know it is stressful.

  • I was a little worried when I screened positive for Downs with the quad screen so I know it's hard not to imagine something is wrong. Try not to let one soft marker get you panicked, most of the time everything turns out just fine. Remember that these are just screenings, they aren't perfect and they aren't giving you an actual diagnosis. Hopefully your MAT21 results will come back great and give you some peace of mind. It's very likely the femur just needs to catch up and will measure better in future scans. Good luck!

  • Only 99% accurate? That is actually a very good rate of accuracy. Of course that means a 1% chance of error, but that isn't high at all!

I hope everything continues to go well for you.
