1st Trimester

Safety question: hair coloring

My roots are driving me nuts, but my very lazy research says something along the lines of, "Don't do it at all in the first trimester, and you should probably just not do it at all while pregnant."

I want the permanent salon job. I hate the at-home demi options (too many wrong turns in my past on that route). If it really is a risk to the baby, of course I'll wait. But if it's not, I do not want to go on looking this junky. I'll ask my midwife at the next appointment, but that's a few weeks away.

Anyone else? Thoughts? Discussion?

I asked my DR about coloring/dying my hair while pregnant at my first appt. She said it is suggested to wait til after the first trimester but confessed that she herself did not wait until after first trimester when she was pregnant! I ended up using an ammonia free hair color at home a few weeks ago to tide me over.

  • I asked my stylist recently since I have been going to her since I was 4 and trust her, and she said don't do it the first trimester.

  • I've colored my roots twice since pregnant. Then again I can do it myself with the professional hair color because I went to cosmology school. So I usually go outside and I can get it in very fast and usually put a bag over my head (helps the color process better) and keeps the smell out

    It's a BOY

  • I know people who have done it and everything was fine. Personally, I am an all-natural-avoid-parabens kind of girl to begin with... so I have been even more careful about it since I have been pregnant.

  • I got my hair colored at 4 weeks. I told my hair dresser. She was not worried.

She was pregnant while working at the salon and got her hair colored.

I get mine colored every three months. I am not worried.
Just make sure your hair dresser knows you are pregnant. Mine I think just used something different I think.

  • I'm a hairdresser and we're taught that it is fine. There's never been any proof it's an issue. The color is not on your skin long enough to be absorbed. I told my doctor that's what I did for my job and she didn't express any concern. I do however understand your worry because I'm a freak about everything. My suggestion would be a Demi permanent professional color. There's no ammonia or the same harsh chemicals that are in color because there is nothing that opens up your hair shaft, it just stains the cuticle. Plus it processes faster. This is all I'll be doing for a while just because I'm paranoid! Hope this helps
  • My OB said to wait until the 2nd trimester.

  • Gaaaaaah. So basically, there's no hardcore research showing a problem, but none showing absolute safety, right?

I know that's the case with much of life. But, blargh.

  • Wait til after the first trimester. That's what I did with my first and will again this time. You just have to deal with the roots for a little longer. It's worth it to have a healthy baby.
