Babies: 3 - 6 Months

WWYD- friend and solids

So my friend has a 4.5 month old and we were talking about what our kids were up to. Her LO was falling asleep and it was like 7 and she was tryibg to keep her up and i was like when is her last bottle of the day she said she already had it at 5 ans then she goes to bed at 9... she was saying that she started oatmeal and fruits and gives her some before bed to keep her full through the night... I said how many bottles a day is she on and only 2-3 of 4 oz only.. She gave her a bottle at 9 tonight but I think that's bc my jaw had dropped to the floor when she said 2 bottles a day. I don't think she knows that formula is the most important before 1... Her LO is on 3 meals a day already.... Would u say anything or just keep ur mouth shut? She doesn't go back to pedi until 6 month checkup...

Re: WWYD- friend and solids

  • Yes I would say something.....how is her kid not crying from hunger all day long?

  • The problem is I won't see her for another 3 weeks so I either have to call or text her since the moment has passed which is akward. When she said it I did say what did your pedi say and she said they never discussed it... She thinks solids fill up her belly better :(

I would pick one of the two battles to fight and the one to pick is more formula.  Sure, solids aren't great at that age but they're not definitively detrimental to every baby.  What IS detrimental is not enough formula but if you criticize both things you'll almost surely anger her.  No one likes criticism and the more there is, the less likely you are to get through to her.

You should mention to her that it's great how well her daughter is eating solids (a lie but you've got to buffer this with compliments - it works best) and then say "I didn't realize how much formula they're still supposed to have until 1!  My doctor started talking to me at our last appointment and stressed that solids are fun but that babies still need to eat about 4-6 ounces every four hours during the day until they transition to milk after they're one.  Did your doctor mention that?"

In this case I would employ another lie.  Later next week text or PM her and mention that you had your LO at the doctor's this week and since you're getting close to solids age you asked her to remind you of the guidelines (since I now see you have an older child so you can't really claim FTM ignorance lol).   You can then go on to say that you'd forgotten how slowly you're supposed to start out and, since she hasn't met with her doctor yet, you thought you'd share that your doctor reminded you about the 4-6 ounces every 4ish hours rule, regardless of their solids intake since they're just for fun and exposure to tastes and textures.
