Question for our nurses

DH recently told me that the past few times he went to the doc his BP was high. The doc wanted him to come in at some point when he was not sick to do a BP check. he made the appointment for this week, but he's sick again, which brings us to the question.

Last night after taking NyQuil and his inhaler he went to lay down. All of a sudden he felt awful. He got up and took his BP. 191/110. He took it a while later and it got down to 159/91.

My question is whether we should have taken him to the ER. After googling we were left with no real answers, except that the meds are probably what made it shoot up since he's borderline hypertensive anyway. So of course he opted to stay home.

I'm trying to convince him to go to the doctor in the morning, but definitely going to call regardless. I'm just wondering, if it spikes again, at what point do we head to the ER? What numbers make it an emergency situation?

Sorry this is so long...I just worry over him.

Re: Question for our nurses

  • Symptoms such as chest pain, headache, blurred vision, numbness can also be a sign. Like Andrea said, most cold pills have a tendency to raise your BP and heart rate. I would say he needs to call the dr ASAP tomorrow or 911 if he starts having symptoms
