Stm's: what size clothes?

So showers are done, got a few sleep sacks but we really need clothes and are going to spend our gift cards on that. I've heard babies are usually a size up.
So how much newborn vs 3 month vs 6 month clothing do U think a ftm needs. I probably have already 7 newborn onesies.

Re: Stm's: what size clothes?

  • DS was 7 lbs 12 oz at birth (so not huge, but not tiny) and was in newborn clothes for about a month, and then 0-3 until he was just about 3 months old. So, my advice would be to have a good variety in each size, but keep your receipts and don't wash or remove the tags on any of the larger size items. Concentrate on onesies, soft pants, and sleep and plays for the newborn/0-3 month stuff and keep the cute outfits to a minimum.

  • It will depend on how big your little one is when born. For an average baby (7 lb.) newborn will fit, but as they get bigger, will quickly grow out of newborn clothes. But if you have a longer/bigger baby newborn won't fit. If you have a smaller baby (like I did) I needed to go out and buy preemie, then newborn clothes. For a new baby, you will want something with arms and legs, I put a onesie under the sleepers/outfits. But I wouldn't buy a ton of newborn stuff. My son ran true to size, so we never were up a size at any stage - but again, it depends on the size of your little one. You will also find that size will change due to maker. I think Carter's long sleeve/short sleeve onesies, run true to size. Gerber onesies and sleepers run small. For sleep sacks, I like to have two in each size, that way if one gets wet in the night, I have at least one back up. I also like gowns (for boys and girls) to sleep in at night under the sleep sacks- then when I change the baby after feeding, they don't get too cold and wake back up!! They are also nice, because they run long, and therefore fit a bit "longer". Personally, I haven't bought much clothing for 6+ months, only because we live in upstate NY, and to be honest, depending on how big baby is or isn't, the clothing might not fit/not be appropriate weather wise. For me, we also received a lot of outfits when the baby was born.
  • It depends on the kid.  All of my kids were in 2T by 10 months old, so I had to buy new clothes for them almost every month.  That's not the norm, however.  I would just buy what you need for the winter months is size NB and 3 months and save the gift cards for 6m+ clothing.

  • My kids have always been 1 size ahead of their age. NB size my youngest was in the longest, but she was also the smallest at birth.
I would buy a few things but not a wardrobe.
  • My DS was in newborn for almost 3 months but he was born at 5lbs 13oz and dropped to 5 lbs 4 oz. This LO is a girl so I have bought 5 long sleeve onesies and pants to match, probably about 8-3 month long sleeve onesies and like 5 pairs of pants, and between my sis and sis in law they gave me like 13 0-3 month feetie pjs that my neice's used. I also have like 4 of the sleeping gowns, so it doesn't seem like a ton but it will get me through several days w/o doing laundry and when we see how big she is we will buy more. Also you never know what gifts people may bring her at the hospital or for Christmas, so I would not rush to spend the gift cards:)
  • Like previous moms said - I wouldn't rush to buy everything now. Have a few outfits in newborn, 0-3 and 3 month. I knew DD1 was going to be around 9 pounds. I brought a newborn and a 3 month outfit to the hospital, she never fit in newborn clothes. DD2 is looking to be about as big too...

  • I returned all the newborn clothing for 0-3mo. Newborn goes up to 8lbs and all my babies were 8+lbs. My LO is already weighing an estimated 5lbs at 30 weeks so I'm positive she won't fit into any newborn clothes at birth. I would only buy a few outfits, they seem to grow so fast, plus you never know with the changing seasons what the weather will be like here.
  • My DD#1 was just over 7 lbs and long but fit in nb clothes for minths as long as they didn't have feet. She has always been tiny at the waist and even now at 3.5 she fits a 2T in all but length. So it really does depend on the mid as PP said. I completly second the comment of not to buy to many outfits and to focus on sleepers and onsies with soft pants, especially in the winter. DD#1 lived in sleepers for the first 3+ months. She always looked so uncomfortable in "outfits" before then.
  • It depends on the baby. Our 1st was 10 pounds at birth, and never wore newborn size. He started off in 0-3 month. Our 2nd was the same. Cute little DD was only 7 pounds 5 ounces so wore newborn for a bit.

  • Like everyone else here said, it is just going to depend.    DS1 had a stomach condition (pyloric stenosis) that required surgery at 8 weeks old as he ended up only weighing one more ounce than when he was born at that point.

At 4 months, he only weighed 11 pounds, so was still in some newborns, and the rest 0-3.

  • DD was 7lbs 1 oz and 19 inches long.  I would say average size.  She wore newborn clothes for 3-4 months and then went into 0-3 months.  She is now almost 16 months and can wear 18 months clothes so somewhere along the way she "caught up" to her size.  I would save the gift cards and shop a week or 2 after baby is born to be sure.

  • I'd get a few of each. I had 1 newborn footed onesie with DS and he was swimming in the 0-3 stuff. At 4.5 he still rocks 2T shorts and swim trunks.
