Pregnant after IF

Cord banking?

I apologize if this has been asked before, I know I have seen threads on the BMB but curious what you guys are doing, since many of us have spent quite a bit already just to get here. I am starting to lean towards donation. Mostly because of cost. We already pay 1,000 a month for storage for frozen embryos along with thousands spent on our IVF journey. If the cord blood was a one time fee I may be more inclined but an additional yearly storage fee is tough. Any thoughts on this? Maybe can be done with a sibling (assuming we are blessed) when less tapped out for cash?? Any input is appreciated!

Re: Cord banking?

  • We looked into the the benefits of both and decided to donate. I looked a it like we don't privately bank passed loved ones organs so why should I not donate incase someone needs it and my child might never need it and your baby can't use their own cord blood. But it's a Personal decision and just depends on how you feel about it.

  • Check out the different companies. We were able to bank until E is 18 for a reasonable cost. We paid all up front instead of annually bc we got a good deal. We also got a free year for referring people, so we ended up with 3 free years.
If that's still unreasonable at this time, please do donate. That's a wonderful thing to do.

  • @TJ1979 do you mind letting me know which company you went with? Feel free to pm me. It's the annual cost that gets me. If we don't bank, I will definitly donate. Thanks!

  • I'm leaning toward delayed clamping instead of cord banking.  I think banking can only help with certain specific genetic issues, so I'd rather LO get the most he can from his blood supply at birth. If I'm understanding this correctly, if OB delays clamping the cord for about a minute, the extra nutrients from the blood go directly into the baby.

  • @golfrgal I need to look into that. I did a little bit of searching on clamping and I a a bit nervous because when I lost my twins, I had trouble delivering the placenta and any increase risk in bleeding makes me very nervous. But I really don't know much about it at all. @TJ1979 I will check out your info and of we do it, will use you as a referral. Thanks so much! All of these decisions, guess its part of parenting ;)

Yep! I was reading up on this as well! It's standard practice for the hospital I'm delivering at.

  • We are doing cord banking and cord tissue banking. I lost a parent to cancer and if I had this he would have lived most likely. It is worth the small cost to save a life.
