Hand Foot and Mouth Disease ???

So my 2 year old has HFM disease...He is very cranky and just doesn't feel good, does anyone have any experience with there child having this?

Re: Hand Foot and Mouth Disease ???

  • My son had it....not a whole lot you can do. Alternate Tylenol ibprophin. The uncomfortable part really only lasted a week but his hands and feet peeled for a month! It was gross.

  • DS has had it twice already, but knock on wood, both times were fairly mild.  Agree with tylenol and motrin.  if their mouth sores are bad, they can really hurt, esp when they swallow.  Make sure your son is getting enough fluids and staying hydrated.

By the time the rash shows up, the illness is already towards the end, so they should be on the mend.

  • we had it when DS was 10 months.  He had a mild case. Like pp said, there's not a whole lot to do other than to give tyelnol or advil.

Our pediatrician said they are most contagious a day or two before the fever until two days after the rash appears.

  • My DD and I had it at the same time two summers ago.  She did much better than I did.  I would keep his fever down with tylenol and give him lots of hugs and cuddles.  Good luck!
  • I will add that my pediatrician mentioned "magic mouthwash."  I don't remember the exact recipe but you may want to ask about that.  It is supposed to soothe the mouth discomfort.
  • My son just had it- it was a really bad case- high fever, mouth blisters, blisters on hands, feet, face and bottom. Poor little guy. It took a whole week for him to feel better and get back to his normal, happy personality. He even went back to 2 naps a day... The worst!!!
  • My daughter and I currently have it (although we are on the tail end). Her pediatrician said it was one of the worst cases she has ever seen. It is so hard seeing your child in that much discomfort. The only things that really helped were Motrin right before bed and right when she woke up. As well as some fruit flavored ice pops that soothed the sores in her mouth. She also loved being in the bathtub, so I let her soak for 30-40 minutes--just make sure you add extra lotion when they get out.

I'm sorry for your little one and I hope it passes soon!!

  • DD had a very severe case of HFM at 6 months. The Doctors had never seen anything like it. Luckily she wasn't in a lot of pain. No sores in her mouth or anything just her legs and arms. Mortin worked for us and I keep her hydrated. Hope LO feels better soon.
