Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Sleep training suggestion PLEASE!

Hello ladies. I need help here. DS is almost 9 1/2 months he started sttn and then suddenly a month ago it stopped. Now he wakes up 2-7 times a night and breast feeding is the only thing that puts him back to sleep. He is EBF and on solids. He weighs 19 1/2# (50th percentile). He does not know how to soothe himself at all. He does sleep with a pacifier but only keeps it in his mouth when he first falls asleep. If he wakes up from a nap, he will cry until you come get him. We tried the sleep whisperer method (supposed to be similar to FERBER) but that did not work and he cried in total of 6 hours two nights in a row. He has been a horrible sleeper since day 1. However you can set a clock by his nap times. His schedule is: up at 6am, 9:30am 30 min nap, 2:00 nap 30 min- 2 hours), 8pm bed. Lately he has been waking up at 11:30/12 and 3:30 and talking to him and rubbing his back do not work. He wants boob. Please ladies I need a sleeping solution. DH is going out of town and this is the perfect time to sleep train because do is suck a sensitive sleeper. THANK YOU!

  • Oh. Ped. Said she did not feel any new teeth buds (he already has 6) so teething is not the culprit.

  • It may pass. If it continues for a while, I always recommend Kim West's Good Night Sleep Tight book. We've found her methods helpful for our LO. It is not a cry-it-out method. We modified it slightly to meet our needs, but the basic premise is good.
  • Sleep sense was a god sent for us. Step by step daily videos for 14 days. Money back guarentee. She was sleeping through the night on day 3. It was a modified CIO and truly made sense.
  • When you nurse your baby in the middle of the night, it establishes a new eating time.  My daughter would wake up every night at 3 and 5am to eat.  It was like clockwork.  So I started only feeding her for 2 minutes then putting her back in her crib and then reduced that to 1 min.  Then, I offered her a bottle with water to shower her I wasn't going to feed her and if she kept getting up, all she would get was a bottle of water.  That cured the 3am wakenings but then I still fed her at 5.  This past week we dropped the 5am feedings and we did it the same way.  Just stick to your guns and it will work out.  It took us about a week.  But if you keep waking up and feeding him, he will establish a new "meal time" and think he should eat at that time every night.  Good luck.
