Putting down while awake for sleep?

How many people out their Los down while awake to get to sleep on their own? This seems to work only if my LO is really sleepy and usually at nap time. If it put her in crib without being totally in a good sound sleep she'll get up and fuss/whine. I'm not ready for cry it out so what should I be doing? Keep going in and rocking her? But then she'll fall asleep while rocking which defeats the purpose of putting down while awake? Ftm confused over here!!

  • I would like to hear about this too! I've heard this advice but I also feel like it might be useless until dd is old enough to self soothe, so I'm not sure!

  • Yeah, this doesn't really happen for us
  • With my dd I put her to bed at night when she has fallen asleep in my arms, and I wake her up while carrying her to the crib. She often lays awake in her crib for 30 minutes before she falls asleep on her own. If she doesn't fall asleep while eating (this is rare) then I put her down awake. She takes longer to put herself to sleep, but does. I feed her in a dimmed room before bed.

Putting her to bed awake during the day doesn't work yet, I'm waiting until she is down to two naps a day before I start it.

  • I have never been able to put my son down to fall asleep on his own. I am lucky if he will stay asleep after I put him down.

  • I can't do it either but my hubby can. He said he put her down the other night and held her hand and gently shushed her to sleep! How cute. However she wasn't feeling well so I'm sure that had something to do with it. I'm going to start practicing this more during the daytime naps and cross fingers it'll work. I can't handle CIO so she will just have to be picked up, cuddled for a moment and then put back down. GL to you!
  • I keep our room nice and dim when I do DS' s last feedong before bed. After he feeds I holdhim upright on my chest for 10 minutes. Then I put him down. Sometimes hes asleep but will usually wake uo a little when I lay him down. Sometimes he's awake. I leave him to fall asleep. Depending on how tired he is sometimes I have to go back upstairs a couple times to put his paci back in. Once hes almost asleep and it falls out he doesn't mind and goes to sleep. The whole process can take an hour some nights or a few minutes, like last night. Only once so far I've had to go up and lay down on my bed next to the bassinett and he was asleep within 10 mins. I'm going to continue this so hes used to falling asleep on hiz own. Hopefully it keeps going well!

  • Doesn't work during the day, really. I think she is just more interested in her surroundings. We put her in the crib at night awake. She generally stays awake for about 15-20 minutes, just hanging out. We put her down with a pacifier, in a swaddle. She usually spits out the pacifier within 10 minutes and is chill.

We make the room dark, turn on white noise and a little light show projector for her.

Don't hate me, but he does a great job falling asleep on his own, sleepy or not, though the room needs to be dark (we have an led candle on for a night light and he stares at that till he falls asleep), and one of us needs to be in there with him. This doesn't always work if he is in the active alert state, but works reliably well if he's quiet alert.

  • Yeah, this has never worked for us. DD won't fall asleep on her own, and if I try to put her down without being asleep, she fusses and starts thrashing around like a madwoman. It usually takes 3-4 tries of putting her down while she's asleep before she'll stay that way. It's tough when we are tired, but I try to remember that she won't always want to fall asleep in my arms.

  • We put DS down at night when he begins to show signs of getting sleepy, but is still awake and he will be asleep within 10- 30mins. We started doing this at 7 weeks old, but at first it took him at least an hour to settle and now he is asleep much sooner. I put him in the crib after bedtime routine, reading a story and give him a pacifier. Also, once we put him in the crib we try not to pick him back up, but we do soothe him by rubbing his belly, patting him, etc.

It was hard at first, but everyday it's much easier and last night he was asleep by 8:30.

  • I have been successful in getting LO to fall asleep on her own when she is in her swing or her RnP. If I put her in her crib she will fuss a bit and eventually fall asleep. If she starts crying and is really upset (a rare occasion) I will pick her up out of her crib. I have noticed I have to have some noise in order for her to fall asleep on her own. She doesn't like the quiet and will actually wake up if there isn't noise.

  • This hasn't worked for us during the day but DS usually falls asleep pretty easily at night. The hardest part for me is putting him down smoothly enough to not startle him.

  • This was never an option with DS because of his reflux...we just sleep trained around 7 months.   Sometimes DD will go down awake, but I'm not really worried about it.  She going to regress at least once within the next 6 months anyway, so as long as I've got the foundations of good sleep associations, we'll work on going down awake later.

  • I put her down drowsy but awake all the time, and almost always, she does go to sleep. I don't do cry it out either, at least not this young, but I don't think that fussing and whining are equal to crying. She can make a bit of noise and I leave her. If she honestly cries, for more than 30 seconds or so, I go to her and pick her up and soothe her. Or sometimes, all she needs is a pacifier and will stop crying without being picked up at all.

I have two kids now, and am so thankful that I made sure DS fell asleep on his own, and am doing the same for DD. With multiple kids, having to rock each one to sleep would be nearly impossible!

  • If she is very full and the right temp (she's always hot), I can do it 75% of the time for naps IF I lay her on her belly.

Nighttime is a no go and on her back is a joke. Sometimes I can make it work if I lay her on her side. I pretty much just do belly now anyways.

  • During the day it's hit or miss but we started putting her to bed awake but tired very early. If she didn't fall asleep we'd obviously get up with her but she just got better and better at falling asleep. We rarely have any times where she won't go to sleep, it usually only takes a couple minutes if even that.
  • Maybe where I'm struggling is that is almost always falls asleep nursing at night then if I don't get her into her crib smoothly enough she wakes up and cries or is really fussy to the point I feel like I should get her. She doesn't take a paci so that's not an option. I want her to be able to go to sleep on her own but something about being asleep while eating then waking up while getting into the crib seems to upset her. Is it recommended to wake her up a little after eating then put her down drowsy or just let her sleep If she's already sleeping and put her down drowsy the few times she doesn't nurse to sleep?
