Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Sleep-12 mo old

My daughter was severely colicky the first 2.5 mo of her life (8-12 hrs/day screaming bloody murder).  Since our 1-night of sleep training and countless days of nap training, she has been great.  Lately, she's been sleeping 8:15-6 (or close to) and taking one 40 min nap and one hour fifteen to 1.5 hr nap/day.  The morning one is at 9:30 and the afternoon at 2:30.  The long/short flip-flop...sometimes long in am, sometimes short.  She's been waking up a little earlier the past couple days and her naps have been getting shorter, sometimes only 30 mins.  Is her sleeping normal for her age?  Screaming before both naps yesterday, but I think that's b/c she had an hour in the car both in the am and afternoon and didn't tire herself out.

  • Like today...woke up at 5:25, then fell back asleep after less than 10 min of crying

  • It's hard to say "normal" about baby sleeps because babies are so different. I recently adjusted L's naps (from 3 to 2 naps) and he now goes to bed earlier and sleeps longer at night. He goes to bed around 6 or 630pm and sleeps until at least 7am. (he had been sleeping about 7 or 8pm to 6am) His naps are better too.
If you're happy with her sleep, I would leave it, if you want her to sleep more, I would try putting her to bed earlier. I'd always heard with babies, the earlier to bed, the later they sleep, but I didn't quite believe it until we did it.
    DS is 12 months.

  • I think sometimes we (myself included) have a misconception that our LO's sleep is going to be this perfect timetable.

If we think about ourselves, if I wake up without an alarm, I don't always wake up perfectly at 7AM.  Some days, it is 630, some days it is 715, know what I mean?

One thought would be that my DD dropped her morning nap, for the most part, around 1 year old.  It was pretty early to drop her nap, but she started taking 2-3 hours in the middle of the day.  She is 18 months now, and sometimes she needs the quick 45 minute nap in the morning and 1.5-2 hours in the afternoon, it varies.  Maybe your LO is in a transition?
