GTKY: Anyone with large age gap siblings?

DD will be 13 (13!!) when this pup is born. I had her when I was 19, hence the large age gap.

Anyone else with larger age gap siblings? This all feels brand new to me, I can't remember much from over 13 years ago!

Re: GTKY: Anyone with large age gap siblings?

  • This is our first baby, but my brother and I are nearly ten years apart. We are going to have to sneak him into the hospital to see his new niece or nephew because the hospital doesn't allow visitors under 18 besides the baby's siblings, and he'll only be 17. Siblings with a big gap are a blessing! I feel better prepared for this baby because I got to help raise my little brother, and I honestly think he and I get along better than most siblings born right after each other. I'm sure your kids will feel the same way!

  • My stepkiddos are 8, 13, and 18 so definitely an age gap there. We haven't told them yet but our youngest is always asking when will he get to be a big brother too. Oh sooner than you think my love lol  :))

  • My stepson will be 8 when this bundle of joy is born!!!

I know it's going to be an adjustment....he lives with us and gets 100% of our time and attention! [-O<
  • I was 19 with dd who is 12. My son is 3 and then this one. So a 9 year gap.

  • I have a 14 year old (will be 15 next month) that I had right after I turned 20. I have another that is 10 (turning 11 next month) and one that is 8 (turning 9 before this baby is born)
  • I have a 13 year old stepson, we haven't told him yet. Still kind of waiting a little longer before we do.

  • My stepson was 11 when my son was born, so I guess it is really DH that you would relate to. He seemed to remember the basics easily enough. There was plenty that had changed though so be prepared for that. I will say my SS and DS have a great relationship.

  • Not my kids, but I'm 7 years older than my little sister. My older sister is 10 years older than the baby.  My mom spaced us out...

  • DD will be 7 and a half at the time we are due. I am 8 years older than my brother and our niece is almost 11 years older than our new nephew.
  • It's nice to have the big gap at times. I have an 11, 8, and 1 year old and my 11 year old can be a big help with the baby.

I am in the same boat as you, my DD will be 14 in January. I haven't told her yet or my parents. I was a single mom at 18 and again now at 32. Things are SO much different this time around!
  • My Son and new baby will be over 10 and 9 month apart.

I've looked at current baby stuff and I'm overwhelmed! I can't believe how much has changed in 13 years!

  • My stepson will be 12 when LO is born. He's a great big brother to his other siblings, not as big of an age gap there though. I'm hoping they can still be close later on with the 12 year age gap.

  • I was 19 when dd was born and she will be 8 and 1/2 when this little babe is born. I don't remember anything of being pregnant and was so poor with her, we didn't even have a very proper nursery- just the basics. I feel like everything is brand new. Although, I am so excited dd will be at an age where she can understand being a big sis and will be able to help out!
  • Ok, here's a question to throw out there: what do you think about baby showers for second children in this kind of situation? Most moms have unloaded all of their baby stuff by the time the first one reaches school age or so, so do you think this merits another baby shower, or is that still too socially taboo? (My mom's coworkers threw her a mini-shower for my brother, since I was nearly 10 years older and a girl)

If the kids are years apart, I don't see a problem. I have a couple friends who have 3 kids and had showers with all of them, but they were all at least 4 years or more apart.

Even if I kept all my baby stuff for 13 years it would be outdated and possibly recalled!

  • I don't see an issue if someone wants ti throw a shower. Of course, around here everyone has a shower with each child. But always after baby is born, so more like a meet and greet with gifts

My parents had 2 kids, waited 10 years then had 2 more kids, so there are age gaps. I'm the youngest. There are 14 years between me and my oldest brother and 13 years between me and my sister. Still not close with my oldest brother (I have another brother who is 3.5 years older than me that I'm closer to) but my sister and I are inseparable. My sister and I had more like an Aunt/Niece relationship than sister/sister while I was growing up until I was a late teen. She helped to raise me and I thought of her as a second mom. As we've both aged, the age gap matters less and less. It helps that her kids and my kids are only about 5 years apart.
