We took our son a few months ago. We did not dress him up for it. I do not regret not dressing him up. I would say only about 10-20% of the kids present were dressed up.
They were selling all kinds of ridiculously priced tings. I would explain to my kid beforehand if there is a budget for that kind of stuff. Joshua is young enough that he does not have the 'I Wants' yet.

We took our two year old last month! He LOVED it! There was the Sophia bit, then the intermission then the Jake part, so he had to sit through the princess bit which he wasn't familiar with but it was fine! He dressed up fully as it was close to Halloween and I found a Jake costume easily! He loved being dressed up, but lots of kids weren't.
We went a couple weeks ago in the Detroit area. We loved it! It was a great show. My daughter dressed up in her Sophia dress. I would say about 40-50 % of kids were dressed up. Have fun! It was so worth the money.
